INDIANAPOLIS - The Rev. Al Sharpton criticized the Christian right Tuesday for focusing too much political discussion on abortion and same-sex marriage and said black churches must talk about fighting poverty, equal access to education and other social justice issues.

With comedian/activist Dick Gregory at his side, Sharpton also condemned Indiana's new voter ID law requiring people to present government-issued identification at the polls.

"We have been inundated in the faith community with bedroom sexual morality issues and not dealing with the broader moral issues of poverty, of injustice and of health care," Sharpton said at a news conference amid a two-day meeting of talks and revivals.

"We can no longer be misused by some in the Christian right that will not deal with the broader issue of injustice and fairness and inequity in our society," the 2004 Democratic presidential candidate said.

So does that mean it's ok to charge a poll tax, even if it's just $5? It's essentially the same thing, people are having to pay to vote.

Now if we wanted to keep people who aren't supposed to vote (illegals) from voting, why not just spend the money in a better way and build a fucking wall!! Solves multiple problems that way.

I have never been to a poll before (will be voting for the first time this election) but from what I've heard, the way they identify you is pretty easy to exploit. I was told that you simply state your name, they look it up and then read off the address that's in their records and ask if that's correct. Well, uh yea sure, that's where I live, that's me alright, can I vote now?

Showing a valid ID to vote should be as much a "No-Brainer" as cashing an out of town check ANYWHERE in the country....try doing THAT with-out a photo' ID.

Because everyone should have an ID to do other stuff anyways. Buy alcohol, drive, pay w/ a cc. Its not exclusive to voting, and its not just illegals trying to vote.

There shouldnt be anyone without an ID, unless your living off in the wilderness somewhere.

Did it miss something all these years?  I thought that if you applied yourself in school and did well that you could get all the education you want.

Damn, I guess I am out of the loop.

Yeah, they HAVE equal access to public education!    But do they *USE IT*?


I'm going to go way out on a limb here and say what I really think.


There is this "black culture" in America that isn't so much pro-black as it is anti-white,
with "white" being all the things that white people do which seem to characterize them.

Things like going to school and studying and learning the lessons.   Like getting a decent
grade point average and earning admission to a decent college.   Like staying in school
and going to that college and actually spending time studying THERE, too, and getting
a degree as a result....a degree that opens the door to good jobs that pay well and allow
you to build a good life without having to be an exceptional athlete or have to break
the law to get the paychecks.

Things like not fucking everything in sight and at least TRYING to provide a good home
life for your kids,  and not going out to mess around with your no-good, going nowhere,
doing nothing "homies" (friends, in white-speak) who are not heading in a direction that
will take them upwards in a legal manner, either.

Things like taking responsibility for your own actions and acknowledging that for every
action, there is a reaction.    And that you ARE the sum of what you have done, learned,
and experienced.   You are only a good person if you do good works.  Good intentions
and bad deeds together do not make for good work.   It makes for failure.  


If these are what "the white folks" do,  then maybe it's time to act like them.  It IS
a path to a successful life more often than not.


There are streets that lead out of every ghetto.  The one that is the broadest is the
one known as school.    Follow it and reap the rewards.   Or you can chase that ball
down the other street, and if you're VERY lucky,  you might make some money  at it.
If you're one in a million,  you might make a LOT at it.    But here's a tip...don't quit
your day job.....if you have one.    There are other streets that can put a respectable
amount of money in your hands quickly,  but on those streets there are a great many
dangers.   Walk down that path and you may get rich, but you may easily die trying.
And the possibility of spending most of the rest of your life in prison is also too great
to ignore.    It is not the path that a wise man will take.     There is nothing harder to
earn than "easy money".


Above all,  use your ability to observe people.   Observe the habits and traits of highly
successful people, and emulate them.
