just got this email
----I just found out that should you ever be forced to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your Pin # in reverse. The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to help you. The broadcast stated that this method of calling the police is very seldom used because people don't know it exists and it might mean the difference between life & death. Hopefully, none of you will have to use this, but I wanted to pass it along just in case you hadn't heard of it. Please pass it along to everyone possible------ what says you the hive mind? I call

The alarm system in my house has a code that you can enter that will "deactivate" the alarm and call the police.

That would be great until people started doing it when they weren't getting robbed, and pocketing the money.
Then again, why bother. It's not like the bank gives your money back if you get robbed at the ATM. |

Actually, the PIN is encrypted at the ATM before it is transmitted to the host system for validation, and (on a system with decent security) stored hashed on the server. For a piece of software to know that the string submitted by a customer was the reverse of the actual password, it would have to try to validate it both ways (since it can't pull up the actual string in the clear from anywhere). The example given by JeepCherokee is a good exercise in logic. |

To put the machines I've worked on in anything other than normal operating mode, you have to get inside of them. There is nothing nefarious you can do with the controls accessible to customers. |

I did that once when I worked at Radioshack. The last number of your code would not be on the bottom row, ie. 7,8,9. If you replaced the the last number with the one below it the police show up. Well noone told me that and the keypad was small and behind a display and my big fingers hit the wrong number and the police showed up yeah!

That's false according to Snope's, but my house security system has a special feature for "hostage situations". If someone follows me into the house and takes me hostage, etc ... I can say, "Let me put the code in to turn off the alarm" and type in 4911 and it alerts the police that an intruder is inside the house with me.
Cool, huh? Of course ... when the cops get here he'll be a dead intruder, but still... |

by the time the pd got the alarm, dispatched a unit and they arrived the money the victim and the bad guy would be LOOOOOOOOONG Gone.
