My daughter was reading a paperback book a few days ago. As I passed by she said, “Stupid pigs!”
That got my attention. I asked her what she was reading and she told me “Animal Farm.” She also observed that the pigs were a lot like today’s democrats. (BTW, the book was not assigned reading for school). She then asked me to get her a copy of “1984.” I’m a proud Dad.

She's 15. She's been getting more interested in political matters.
A while back I overheard her lecturing a friend on welfare (it should only be for people who can't work) and how the government doesn't have any money of its own - it confiscates it from productive people and taxpayers have a right to demand that the government be responsible in managing it. I don't know where she gets this stuff from...

Good thought, but with all the fargin iceholes around here, I dont know if I would want MY daughters to be a part of our lovely group until shes at least 35

After she finishes 1984, I bet she would enjoy "Anthem", "The Fountainhead", and "Atlas Shrugged".

She'll be turning 16 in December.
She is disappointed that she will miss the next presidential election by a month. |

FDR's Folly The Best and the Brightest A Better War She will become a life-long capitalist and conservative. |

Fahrenheit 451 might be a good read if she hasn't. If she wants to stick with Orwell though, "Down and Out in Paris and London" aint bad, and "Burmese Days" I liked a lot. If she gets really into the style and voice, she might also like Kipling. Keep her out of Sinclair's "The Jungle". I think every copy comes with a mail in coupon for the socialist party. |

Well, he was socialist, and the book definitely has socialist undertones, but overall I liked that book - just to read about how NASTY it was before we have the FDA and other regulations...I mean, that was the book that caused them the pass the first real regulations regarding food and labels... |
