I always read about how many million viewers are watching any given television show.  How could they possibly know exactly, or even, an approximation???

Just a small survey extrapolated to represent the entire population, I think.

Possibly they can track your TV viewing through your cable provider (tinfoil on).

a van drives around the neighborhood, reading the signal your T.V. is receiving. It really messes with them when your channel surfing as the counter moves everytime you change the channel.

Through surveys.

In television, it is primarily the Nielson company which
handles it. Two methods. Metered markets-(actual devices on sets in selected homes in the market;  and diary markets (selected homes are asked to keep diaries of viewing).

They use representative sampling. That is, a certain number of homes in a community represent the community......Actually, it's pretty accurate. Accurate enough, that the results are used to determine the success or failure of shows, individuals, etc.
The numbers are also used to determine commercial costs.

Last I heard it was the Nielson ratings system. They sign up families after interviewing them. The family's viewing habits are tracked and they use this data to see how many people watch a given show.

Edit: Looks like londo beat me

the cable and satellite companies can tell what you are watching if you use a cable or converter box. i believe tivo can also tell what your watching through their box.

To be able to monitor your brains choices is part of the matrix code.  Of course we don't even know it's going on, or that we are just being used as these...
