saw the flash through the window, orange so I didn't figure it was lightning and the sound was different than thunder
neighbors across the parking lot are powerless now and I see embers falling down from the power line area
I think a branch fell and got vaporized

power company is here, with their spot light on the pole I can see the broken wire from my window, no transformer near that section
but I'm going to shut off my pc in case they have to kill power to my line to work on the broken section

I made the right choice in powering off the pc
they cut the power shortly after

For a second I was confused cause it looked like you posted this four minutes after your last one...

I've been home twice when this has happened and everyone around me loses power. Both times there has been a smoking squirrel laying underneath the transformer. 20 minutes later the power company shows up, flips a breaker with a long pole and we're back in business.

whump sounds like something shorting the lines, branch, squirrel, etc.  When a pole pig (transformer) goes, it's a definite BANG and silvery flash.

Sometimes I think that's why squirrels were put on this planet, to give us a little entertainment in the form of an orange flash and lack of electricity.

Transformer went poof.

Around here they seem to make a louder boom and give off a blue-white flash. Its even cooler when one of the big-ass ones at the sub-station let go.

Our transformer popped earlier this evening and we were without power for 30mins.

Transformer explosion is a good one.

There's also the possibility that he got drunk and tried to start a barbeque under a powerline using a couple cups of gasoline and a match.

Check your neighbors hands and face for flashburns.

Transformers have a service life, and here in the San Gabriel Valley(10 miles east of Los Angeles) the transformers are way beyond the rated serivice life.  The local electricity provider Southern Calif. Edison, used to replace the transformers on a maintence schedule but ever since deregulation and also the last electricity dereg debacle(SCE almost had to declare bankruptcy) in 2002(?), that hasn't been done.

transfomer went last summer on the other side of the building

pretty sure it was the line (there's no transformers on that pole or section of lines but I tree is right over them and the lines often rub up against it, started that tree on fire one year), but I didn't feel like staying up to watch the guys work

A lot of time the noise you hear is a "shotgun" fuse in the line near a transformer. Two metal clips hold the appropriately named fuse and the power guys come and replace it with a insulated pole.
