It's called "The Hunter".    He is my most recent in a series.....

I need to take a picture out side, with natural light, but this will have to do for now.

Rest of the series...from most recent to oldest........

Thanks.

They are ceramic(clay).   I add natural elements and paint after they are fired.

Life size....at least the last one is.  The first ones are just a bit smaller than life.

Roughly, 24" at the widest to 24" at the longest.   That is as big as I can get into the school kiln.

You have some real talent!

That last one is Haunting.  You can just about imagine waking up on the trail with him standing over you.  Yikes!

Is he a Cheyenne Dogman Warrior?

Yes,  from scratch.   No, I'm a teacher.

I donated the last one to Ducks Unlimited to auction off at their dinner.   He sold for $400...the Apache.

That is where this one is destined for also.

first off, Thank you for the kind words.

Sounds good.   Let's go with it.

Sadly, this is why I'm just a hack.   I should put more time into studying what I am trying to create.   When I put one together, I just think along the basic lines; hunter, medicine man...ect.

I utilize some old photos from the net for inspriation, and I like Chief Dan George's face.  This last one got a little away from him, but his features were the base for the representation.

Very orignal and impressive... especially considering how difficult and unpredictible ceramics can be when fired.

I aint gonna yank your chain. If I posted art here, I would want honest answers.

Its not my kind of art, I dont like anything western'ish...so take my criticism with a grain of salt.  IMHO they look like cracked out Mozart & Bach images, or 3-D garbage pail kids.

Funny you should mention that.....

Last year, "The Apache" blew up in the first firing.  Of course, I thought it was better the first time.

He cracked again on the second firing for the glazes.....I had to put resin in the cracks and then cover with a oil paint patina, followed by a spray on clear coat to keep it from rubbing off.  The over all look turned out cool, but it was an accident.  I liked the results so much from last year, I did the same patina this year.

I appreciate you honesty.   Some of my students didn't like it either.  They tend to be pretty hard on me...go figure!

It is a project I teach my students to sculpt faces.   It is not original, but it puts a little different spin on the idea.  You can find similar artwork all over the west...and on the net.

Luckily, my wife has allowed me to decorate my/our basement in "western/african/firearms" style.

They fit right in with my african mask collection, C&R collection, wheel guns, a warthog, a blue grouse, and some fantastic western style work by one of my former students.

I only still have "The Medicine Man" with the skull on his head.  All the others have been donated to raise money for Ducks, or WY state Art symposium.

I really wanted to keep "The Apache", and "The Hunter" is growing on me.

I'm looking at probably 3-4 more years. Coached 18 years of football and track along with the teaching. Now you're not going to believe me on the next part but it's true, I'm also the coach of our high school high power rifle team. We've been doing this for 10 years now and each year now for the past 4 years we've sent a team of kids to Camp Perry, Oh. for the national championships. In the national infantry team match we've won the national once and have come in 2nd three times.

You have some serious talent. Those pieces exude emotion and mystery. They really made me feel like I was looking into the face of a real Indian during their majestic years.

You need professional representation. I truly think that you can get big money for your work.

I wish you the best of luck.

Thanks again everyone for your criticism, and your praise.  I appreciate it.

Richardh247,  Sorry, I've been in DC the last 4 days.
As much as I would like to have a little more spending cash to buy an Aimpoint for my middy, I just don't have the time or even the drive to do another one right now.  I get kind of burned out if I do too many too rapidly.  I've been doing about two a year right now, and both of those have been donated every year.   I will do more next year again, and maybe one more this later in the spring.  The only one I still own that is not being donated at this time is the third one down, with the feathers going out both ways from the head dress..."The Medicine man".  I don't know if my wife would let me sell that one.  I usually replace the one in my house with a new one, then donate the previous sculpure.

I can offer you this.   If you are serious about owning this(The Hunter) particular sculpture, we might be able to work out a way for you to bid on it at the auction this Friday Nov. 3rd, at the Ducks Unlimited Banquet.   I already have one bidder that will not be present, but is going to bid on it.  My real worry is that these are fairly fragile, and shipping it without it becoming a large puzzle would be a bitch!   If it were my money, I wouldn't risk it.

The other person, who will be placing a bid, and not at the auction, only lives 90 miles away, and will be able to come up and take it home later.

Thanks again for the constructive criticism....and I learned what a garbage patch kid looks like.

Great texture and form, and I really like your use of color. I'm pretty strong with shapes (mostly complex geometrics with steel), and so I'm really impressed when artists have the color thing down as you do.

Great stuff!
