It's raining.  Wife and I are bored.  We Rented it.  Watched it.  She loved it and of course I always stare at the weapons since becoming an ARFCOMMER (thanks a lot guys).  Hey man, I'm just glad we got to see an action flick!    Before this it was 4 chick flicks!  I also snuck in Black Hawk Down, I know KUDOS to the wife right?  Anyway...

I’m fully aware G.I. Jane is “just a movie” and it’s accuracy in portraying the Seals and their training is subject to scrutiny.  All I’m wondering is why an XM177 type was chosen to represent the AR in this movie?  Does this have any REAL bearing for Seal training?

Something else that perked my interest is the whole C.R.T. aspect.  The General gets up there and says “Welcome to the SEAL C.R.T. selection program” then goes on to say “You are all proven operators within the Spec Ops community, SEALS, E.O.D., Army Delta, Marine Force Recon, Naval intel community, etc.” which to me implies that this movie is portraying an area of training NOT related to BUD/S training.  What the hell kind of malarkey is this?    If you were ALREADY a Seal, or in Delta, or Marine Force Recon, what would compel you to jump ship and go out for C.R.T.?  Does Hollywood even know what the hell they are talking about?  Somebody enlighten me in a hurry.

Yes, we at ARFCOM just love to talk about the Seals, so WTF is this C.R.T. stuff?  When I first saw G.I. Jane several years ago I thought it was simply a Hollywood stylized portrayal of BUD/S.  But oh no!  This General has to spout off all that and he also says “In spite of your expertise, many of you will not successfully negotiate this program.”

I know.  I know.  It’s just a movie.  So… is there any truth to all of this?

IMDB…
“Incorrectly regarded as goofs: The trainees are part of a Combined Reconnaissance Team (CRT); hence, the training is not identical to Navy SEAL training, as it combines elements from all the branches.”

So what is it then? (CRT) real or Hollywood?

Here's your answer...

It's a movie.. not real...a "MOVIE"

If you go to hoolywood, you can write a movie script also, it doesn't have to be realistic, it just has to make a profit.

There is nothing real about movies.

There was probably very little about that movie that was real, but Demi Moore looked great and there were some hot guys.

I like perky nipples.

Other than that, the movie was complete horseshit.  My favorite part was the Master Chief shooting at students with his Dragunov... and the fact that the point of view through his scope was the same point of view through the camera and was at an impossible angle.  Cheesy as hell.

For a true SEAL documentary, go rent Navy SEALs with Charlie Sheen.  Now THAT was a true-to-life portrayal of the teams in action.

Or The Finest Hour. Possibly the best Navy SEALs movie ever made.

Fixed for more clarity in this case...

G.I. Jane is just a awful excuse for a movie.

I believe it was the M727 carbine which the SEALs actually carried before obtaining M4's.  If I remember correctly (from the movie and actual facts) the M727 is just the M4 with a fixed carry handle.

How could she even qualify to get into BUD/S ?

SEAL team applicants must be male, 28 years or younger, and U.S. citizens.

Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training is conducted at the Naval Special Warfare Center in Coronado (San Diego, CA) and lasts 26 weeks. Assignment to BUD/S is conditional on passing the PST, which requires the following minimums:

   * 500-yard swim using breast or side stroke in under 12:30
   * At least 42 push-ups in 2 minutes
   * At least 50 sit-ups in 2 minutes
   * At least 6 pull-ups (no time limit)
   * Run 1.5 miles in boots and long pants in under 11:30
   * Members’ vision must be 20/70 uncorrected or correctable to 20/20. SEAL candidates may qualify for PRK or LASIK surgery to correct their vision

Again, the above are the minimum requirements necessary to qualify for BUD/S. Prospective trainees are expected to far exceed these minimums. Competitive scores are as follows:

   * 500-yard swim using breast or combat side stroke in less than 10:00
   * 100 push-ups in 2 minutes
   * 100 sit-ups in 2 minutes
   * 20 pull-ups (no time limit)
   * Run 1.5 miles in boots and long pants in under 9:30

I know a few women who can hit those competitive scores.

However, looking for realism in GI Jane is a waste of time.  That said,  they had to make up a unit and a whole bunch of other things because DOD wouldn't provide any help unless they did things DOD's way.  So they based the unit on the Navy SEALs, but called it something else.  The bull about guys coming in from SEALs, Recon and Delta is bull.   They should have just had the recruits coming in from the Infantry, Airborne, Marine Corps, and fleet and gone from there.

GI Jane is no where near film making at it's finest.

But if you like perky nipples, through a thin wifebeater , mixed with a bit of gun porn and explosions then it's not a half bad movie.

Have there EVER been any women SEALS? I would think not, as the training/physical requirements would be too harsh.
Of course in the PC world I guess they could "dumb down " the requirements.

Anyone know for sure?

My biggest gripe about that movie is a technical one: it was porrly lit. Shit, the lighting gear for that flick must have consisted of a 40W bulb, a Scooby-Doo flashlight and a birthday candle.

Though it's unfortunately named I liked G.I. Jane. Not enough to buy it but enough to record it onto DVD.

Another unfortunately named movie I really liked was Starship Troopers.  I love that movie and not just because of the perky tits either.

And Robert A. Heinlein is spinning in his grave so fast, you could hook up a generator and light up all of NYC over that crapfest that was called "Starship Troopers".

Read the book, and you'll really hate the movie.

+10K

I read the book many, many years before seeing the movie.   Although I liked the movie..... it does little to no justice to the book.  Should be on the ARFCOM official required reading list.

fu**!!!  I should have always checked my Master Source (Wiki Pedia!) which has the clear answer.

==========================
G.I. Jane is a 1997 action movie that tells the fictitious story of the first woman to become a Special Forces Operator. Many believe the film shows Moore's character going through Navy SEAL training, but this is inaccurate. Several of her "classmates" are already SEALs. The training Moore undergoes is for a place on the non-existent "Combined Reconnaissance Teams," which apparently draw candidates from the entire military.
==========================

Ahhh Hollywood, you could just play it DOWN rather than play it up.  Just make a movie about a gal going out for the Special Forces.  Leave the whole "Navy Seal" trip alone.  Always with these damn Seals.  Richard Marcinko was probably going ape shit when they invented this CTR crap.  The hell kinda of "advisory" is that?
