Major news orgs are reporting that Dale's seatbelt was broken.  So far no one is speculating whether the broken belt occurred before, or as a result of,the accident.  However, a doctor reported that Dale's injuries were consistant with an impact with the steering column which can be caused by a broken belt.

Had a good friend who died when a weld broke on the harness when he rolled his Super Stock Boss 302... The cars are really remarkably safe considering how fast they go, but scubbing all that speed off in a millisecond on the wall can generate forces to test even the best equipment.
