there is tons of stuff called "M80" or "cherry bomb" or "silver salute" or a million other things, but they are simply model names, they are not actually the "good stuff"
IMO the best bang for the buck out there is the black cat waterproof firecrackers. I dont remember what their marketed model name is, but they come in a box of 100, individually fused. they are pretty fun.

Since the '60s, by federal law, explosive fireworks can only have 50mg of flash powder. Even the shit labled "M80" nowadays is subject to that limitation.

I'm not a fan of the law, because I suspect more people get injured trying to "make" big boomers now than ever did when the stuff was legal and factory made in safe facilities.

Tons of people still make them, see www.cannonfuse.com for fuse and casings, but I'm not going to post the flash powder formula here EXCEPT to say, that if one were to use one of the many internet formulas using "chlorate" oxidizers instead of "Perchlorate" oxidizers, then one would soon be missing fingers and other appendages.

You can get something up here for $5 a pop. Its about 2 inches long by 1 inch thick. It clears about 15 inches of grass or so. If you throw it behind your house on the gravel road your neighbors will really be pissed from all the shit hitting their house

Yeah, and if the dickheads that made that shit opted for the unstable oxidizers instead of the (relatively) stable ones (there's no such thing as "stable flash powder") you will be surprised to find a bleeding stump where your hand was, perhaps even based on latent static electricity in your body.

Guys, don't fuck around with explosive fireworks of unknown province. Its worse than shooting unknown reloads in your guns. Both illegal and dangerous (very very dangerous).

You can walk / drive onto any indian reservation in western WA and buy a million M-80's if you want.

If they are 100% positive you are not the feds / PoPo ... you can buy 1/4 sticks of dynamite also from them.

I was at Shelton's fireworks in Richmond, IN, a few days ago and there were signs everywhere saying that M-80s and "cherry bombs" were forbidden by Federal law.

I bought some "m-70"s and they are pretty cool, but I can't help but wonder what the real deal is like, and how much difference there is.

When I was pickin' some stuff up while I was in Myrtle Beach last week the store had some with AWSOME names. There was one called "Shock and Awe" There was one with a picture of some HSLD-types called "Too Damn Good" My personal favorite was this 8' tall package of morters and a tube called "The Instigator"

I think he said they filled them with black powder, and used epoxy to seal the end.

I read an account once dating from the 1800's, where the original methods of making commercial fireworks (in the US but from 100+ years ago) was being explained.

Originally, a M-80 was equivalent in power to twenty firecrackers, and a cherry bomb was equivalent to eight M-80's. So a cherry-bomb was [by this account] normally equal in power to 160 firecrackers.

The M80 was the original "flash-bang" -- it was designed to simulate grenade combat and they were made by the military. The components are so dangerous to mix in quantity that what they did was take a fused casing with one side open, drop in the oxidizer, drop in the metal fuel, seal the end, and then dump the sealed M80 into a drum filled with sawdust which tumbled the M80s until the powders inside were properly mixed. The specification for an M80 if I remember right called for about a gram of flash powder -- which is finger loss levels.

We made mortars with cherry bombs, galvanized pipe with a hole in the screw cap and golf balls salvaged from the cc.

We also started a road grader and drove it around and went swimming in the Gulf at night (believe me, that was PRE Jaws and before I saw some big hammerheads).

Article link given above stated that M-80's had 3 grams of powder. States they were banned in 1966. Remember buying them in the early 70's, looked just like the picture with the fuse sticking out the side and being the color of real dynomite. They also had ones that had the fuse coming out of the top along the wall of the firecraker and topped with wax, exact same size as the official m-80's but different colors. they would alll destroy the old-time standard mailboxes

I remember my grandfather recalling the days when he was young. Rather than setting of wimpy fireworks, they set off actual dynamite for fun!

Evidently, in those days, it was either mostly unregulated or nobody simply cared. But it sounded as abundant as firecrackers are these days. He said he never had a shortage of it.

Most of those aerial shells (such as the one called "Artillery Shells") make a big enough "bang" to impress me. Plus, they are visually interesting as well, making them better than just a loud detonation with nothing else going on.

For regular fireworks, those were probably my favorites ones to set off.

Oh, and if you want to see something really cool, get one of those huge strings of firecrackers! I remember setting some of those off when I was a teenager. Some of the strings I bought contained 1000 firecrackers. And I had some once that contained 4000. It took forever to unroll them and set them up. But man, once you set them off, they just kept going and going and going. The noise became overpowering and the smoke as dense as a moderate to heavy fog. Those were cool.

We used to throw them in the pond. The carp would grab them and BOOM!

That carp would die and it 5-10 others would float to the surface and swim on their sides for a while. I think it messes up their swim bladders.

The place I mentioned in my eariler post had a roll of 32,000 firecrackers for only 180 bucks. My friends and I were standing there trying to divide up the price between us but I've got some cheap bastards for friends.

Real "M-80s" and real "cherry bombs" are illegal in the United States. They have been illegal in the U.S. since the year 1966. The reason they are illegal is because the U.S. Congress passed a law in 1966, called the "Child Protection Act" which specifically made them illegal. It is illegal to sell, possess or use them anywhere within the United States jurisdiction. The punishment for selling, possessing, or using actual M-80s or "cherry bombs" within the U.S. can be severe. The potential "fun" or "entertainment value" that you might think you would get from using one of these devices is definitely not worth the risk of substantial fines or even imprisonment.

Yes...a few years ago I was at the Tulalip Reservation a few days after the 4th to get some stuff on clearance. The guy was offering to sell me tennis balls and even softballs with 5' fuses attached to them.

I asked him how big of a boom those would make. He said wait just a second and pointed to a part of the parking lot about 100yds away.

All of it sudden there was a boom, a large cloud of dust, and all the car alarms started going off. From my distance, I could definitely feel the vibration.

I told the guy "No, Thanks" I don't want to kill myself.

When I went to checkout the remains of the softball....all I saw was a crater in the hardpan gravel lot.
