IMO, the Polytech Legends are sweet for a Semi-Auto AK. Can you get Polish AK's there? They are top shelf.

I believe the Sako M92S is THE best 7.62x39 rifle made, and following it are the older Sako and Valmet assault rifles.

My Rom. SAR-1 has fired close to 1000 rnds with no problems (Wolf, S/A surp.,S&B)Fit and finish are on the "utilitarian" side but WTH I only paid $300 OTD w/ 2 hi-cap mags.

20,000+ Palestineans and most knowledgeable AK experts agree the Hungarian SA-85 M is a good one, but hard to come by this late in the game.
Not fancy as the Poly-Tech, but accurate (by AK standards), nice fit/finish and very reliable.

Well, the best 7.62x39 are mainly and mostly AK. And you are right, there are so many AK variant out there and you want to know which one is the best.  The best is of course the Russian ones, but I don't see much of those here in the U.S

I saw lots of Chinese made AK, i.e. Polytech and Norinco. I had a Polytech one and it is a fine rifle. But the best available AK available here are the Yugoslavian ones (so they said). If there are Czechoslovakia AKs, get it, I think they are much better than the Russian ones. Simply, they are the best AK in the world.

CZ makes a neat little bolt action carbine in the M-43 Soviet..Very well made.
(You did'nt say it had to be a self loader)

I agree with you. I beleive the Hungarian SA 85M is the best quality AK out there, mines post 89 but still rocks. Im not including the exotics.

According to Mr. Kalashnikov himself, the best are the Bulgarians. They have hammer forged chrome lined barrels, milled receivers, and are nearly indestructable. As for accuracy, I was having trouble with the iron sights, but once I mounted a red-dot sight, it's the meanest semi out there inside 100 yards! I sure wish it had a flash suppressor though - lots of fun at night if you know what I mean....

Here's some pics of mine - I paid $245 for it new, but soon after the prices went up over $500. Also, I added a US parts kit so I could use the standard stock instead of the ugly thumbhole that came with it.

hunter, yes...there are several american made kalashnikov's. i.t.m. from cleveland ohio makes a very expensive variant ($2000 and up) featuring a modular trigger pack. arsenal bulgaria (code 10) has set up a factory in nevada and is cranking out milled bulgarian copies. and b-west built an ak on an american receiver, using chinese parts...back before the '89 ban.

if you want the finest 7.62x39 kalashnikov variant, go with stamped akm type receiver. the russians built the finest akm. unfortunately for 7.62 shooters, they got smart and adopted the 5.45 round over 27 years ago!

that leave you with the very well engineered and built yugoslavian rifles, which, thanks to nato bombs, has the zastava factory in a pile of rubble. these are built on the rpk machinegun reinforced receiver and feature several "improvements" even the russians didn't come up with.

polish akm's are very nice. the metalwork is top notch.

bulgaria seemed to prefer the milled type 3 ak-47, and those are of a quality level just below the russians and poles.

the polytech legend (again, a milled type 3) variant is the closest we can buy to a russian ak-47. these are of very high quality.

if you can get them, look carefuly at the hungarian f.e.g. akm. the finish is soviet military spec. and the craftsmanship is very good.

lastly, do not overlook the egyptian maadi misr/arm. they are the very close cousin to a russian akm. the metal working leaves a little to be desired, but they are as reliable as any ak out there.
