Just wondering what everybody thought was so special about this ammo.

it's a little heavier makes it a little more predictable at long ranges/varying wind conditions. plus it fuels a lot of fantasys about shooting through APCs with a rifle.

Ditto to the above and it's the current NATO standard.  "WooHoo!!!"

How many grains is it?  and does it really "penetrate" better, or is that just BS.  If it does "penetrate" better, what is the mechanism by which it does?  different tip?  Thanks.

The green paint makes the bullets fly faster.

The original SS109 bullet is a FN design, weighs 61.9 grains, and has a steel insert inside it.

I prefer the ol' 55 gr round. Cheaper, and more upset. Neither one shoots worth a crap.

Te penetrator portion of the round is a pointy steel cap under the jacket but ahead of the lead base... these bullets were designed to penetrate kevlar helmets at 200+ yards (I think it was either 200 or 300, but I can't remember what the criteria was) which they do easily.

SS109 bullets fracture at the cannelure causing multiple would paths, but the bullet must be traveling at 2700fps at point of impact. The German mil .308 is similar in performance to the ss109.

Why did you have to ruin that for me?

Brog is right on. Thats why there are some problems with the 14.5 barrel on the M4s.  Not enough velocity.  Supposedly the reason they were not effective on the Sammies. If you want the real thing.  Aimsurplus.com has 900 rounds on belts with tracers every 5th round for $240. By the way, SB you dont know too much for a smart guy.  Dont forget we have that outing to attend either in Sept or Oct.  Once the weather starts to get a little cooler.

Can you guess which one was the SS109?

It's IMI Silver Tip, that's the 62 gr all lead load. Blue tip is the reduced charge load.

Those plates look like the ones I saw at a range.  Some guy was using ss109s and 7.62x39 steel cores.  Blew a hole in the backstop plating and went though the cinder blocks and into the parking lot!  He has a magnet for every round that is shot at the range.
