Safety improvements in schools mark new era

(CNN) -- As school officials muse over how to design a school to
accommodate even more students, decisions about adding security cameras
and installing bulletproof windows are high on the priority list, too.
In the aftermath of the Columbine High School massacre and other school
shootings, many school officials are focusing on creating a safer learning
environment for students in overall school design plans.

"Before, there wasn’t a lot of conversation (about) can this be a secure
environment for students. Now, that’s very much the topic of conversation
that comes up at the beginning of the design process," says school
designer Marilyn Brockman.
Today’s students may walk down crowded hallways with security cameras
quietly observing overhead. Emergency phones may hang on walls next to
blackboards filled with algebraic equations, and bulletproof glass may
shield classrooms and administrative offices.
CNN’s Lillian Kim reports about some of the safety improvements students
might see as they return to class this fall.

I wonder how many students will veiw these "safeguards" as a prison security system.  This may help to create an unruly atmosphere - just the opposite of what is intended.  Sounds like a big leap to me in nanny state thinking.

Will this help create a bunker mentality where it is least justified?  Hell, I didn't know we had a securtiy guard till I saw his picture in the yearbook, in a high school of 1300 with half that again in Jr. high at the other end of the bldg.  

But than, I didn't take phsychology in HS, so what do I know.

That bulletproof glass just makes escape in the unlikely event of a school shooting nearly impossible.  It also makes it that much harder for the police to take care of any nasty intruders.  Sounds like the sheeple seek to make themselves (and our children) even easier targets for psychopaths.

Last time I checked, folks still got killed in prison.

Prisons have armed guards, gates, scanners, barbed wire, dogs, locks, bulletproof glass, cavity searches, lock down, you name it.  Folks still get killed.

What makes them think a little plexiglass will save anyone?  You still have unarmed victims, with little means of defending themselves.

You *could* build a school with the intention of keeping the badguys out for X minutes, where X-5 is the police response time, but that is still pretty risky.

My point of all this is that bullet proof glass is meant to provide personal protection in a close environment (armored car, bank teller, etc).  I mean really, exactly how many attacks have occurred where a bad guy was sniping through a school window?  This sounds like it's going to create more problems than it solves, but then that's the liberal way I guess.

Bullet proof glass is absolutely no good when the shooter is on the inside.

The cameras and the phones are great after the fact.  The cameras help solve the shooting after it's done and the phone gets used after the shooting starts, but you still have to wait for help since they obviously won't consider arming teachers.  That would not be PC, you see.

I think safety at schools is a good idea...but perhaps it would be more effective to teach our kids right from wrong & how to deal with problems in a non-violent/homocidal manner?

Granted, some things just require brute force to solve.

Such problems, typically, do not exist at the "school level"...more at the national level.

Video cameras, bullet proof glass, metal detectors, fingerprinting, tatooed bar codes on our children, implanted chips for tracking....hmmmmm....maybe George Orwell was only off by a couple of decades.

All teachers should have a Glock as a standard sidearm.

Money should be spent making Classroom Doors Bulletproof and with hardened locks.
Just about every shooting takes place within the confines of the school building.
Most people killed/wounded are fleeing the gunshots looking for a safe place to hide.
It would be much cheaper and effective to turn the classrooms into  bullet proof safety zones.
All schools are built with thick concrete walls throughout that are capable of fending off all but the most powerful of weapons.

And, I agree with BigZ.  Don't worry, when they raise your tax "temporarily" by 50 percent to pay for these "safer" classrooms they'll just repeal it when the threat dies down like they do with every tax law.  I'm voting democrat on the next election too. Viva Socialism, you dirty fucks.
