That would have been #6  As a matter of fact, the 5 that I suggested are the same 5 that I received from my dad for Christmas from ages 6-11. The only difference is that he bought me a Daisy Red Ryder for my first airgun at age 5. |

First as always, Congratulations to you and the wife.
Advice: buy quality! .22LR, preference is the 10/22 stainless/composite to last forever. .22LR Pistol of preference, also probably a Ruger for durability. .223 / 5.56 6 Position, light weight upper, Carbine or Middy 20 or 12 Ga, Rem 870 .45 Acp, either a 1911 or my preference a Sig P220 He also needs a .308, but you knew that. Your child is lucky to have you as a parent... Best of Luck |

Note: I kind of want these guns to be "heirloom" guns. I can always pick him up a 10/22 in a few years, but the guns I buy when he is born I want him to treasure and be able to use his whole life.
Guns that may be banned must be considered as well, which is why one of them will almost certainly be an AR15. Speaking of .22's, I was thinking of a very high quality bolt action that he can learn on and pass down the family tree. I heard the Kimbers and CZ's are fine weapons - yes? |

Thats why I posted what I did. The first three are historical and prices are rising to reflect it. The Garand is still very reasonable to buy but I don't expect them to stay that way in 10 or 15 years. AR of course, AK because the next ban will include it and they will never be cheaper then they are now. |

buy the most expensive, evil looking guns you can get, Class 3 if possible. the more likely it will get banned the better. this will be Jr's college fund. i would say:

I've always had a soft spot for the old stevens/savage favorite for a youth .22, I can't take mine to the range without getting compliments on it. Single-shot falling block, excellent first rifle, about $150.
Then I'd buy a basic battery of weapons, just in case he needs them someday and can't buy them due to a ban or whatever. MBR AR Shotgun Service pistol (1911) All greased for long term storage with ammo and mags. Then he really needs a .22 handgun and a deer rifle, but those you will probably be able to pick up later. |

I'll be forking over the cash for them on the day he is born, after coughing up a few thousand (so far) on related medical expenses. I just forked over $4600 in taxes and $2000 for landscaping. I'm not made of money, dude!!!!!!! So far, 2006 is burning my checking account down pretty damn fast.

I would suggest you get him/her a gun that prossibly may not be available when he/she is old enough. For example, I bought my oldest son a Colt Python chamber in 38spl. This is a very special run, and I will give it to him on his 21st birdthday

A single shot bolt .22, like one of the CMP Kimbers. Forces dicipline, and a gun that will be a joy to teach his grandkids to shoot with.
A Garand, as it is a part of american history, they aren't making any more, and it is both used and a piece of living history A sxs or O/U 12G with choke tubes. Versatile, can be used for clays, field gun, etc. A Beretta 686 won't go wrong nor will it go down in value. A somewhat classic .357 revolver in 4" according to your brand preference Someething else that is a modern commodity in the "may become banned" category. An AR with a custom serial number to birth date etc would fit the bill, and you can build it up as desired. Just make an arrangement with any of the lower makers to have one built up, or even build yourself from an 80% receiver and apply markings of your choosing. Start with the lower and a .22 upper, then when he's older add a .223 upper. |

(1) Browning 22 Auto rifle, Grade I or II w/youth stock (he'll be teaching your grandkids to shoot with it, and hopefully you will be there too).
(2) CMP Garand (3) AR15 in case of a ban (4) 1911 (5) something you and he can hunt with together when he gets old enough - a working gun that has value built by memories. if you like waterfowl or field, get a shotgun. if you like deer, get a rifle. pick a caliber or guage he can hunt with for life, but can shoot from a decent age without difficulty. ETA: I am saving up for my son's first rifle now. I couldn't afford anything when he was born, but I want to get him what I put as #1 above. A Browning 22 Auto grade II. I have a 10/22 but I want his first gun to be special and set apart. If I were you, I would only worry about getting one gun now, and I would put it into a special gun the two of you will shoot together and often. Browning grade II and III engraving is a work of art on a smooth, classic firearm that is reliable and timeless. |

ding, ding, ding, .... What he said. Should cost you about $60,000 tomorrow morning. In 4 years they will be worth somewhere around $90,000 to $110,000. (TRACK CAREFULLY pending Law.) Sell one and you could buy every other gun mentioned in this thread. Yea, I know. Wouldn't we both love to walk out the store with 'dem goodies. |

It's really not that bad of an idea to get guns for an unborn child, come to think of it.
Most of the stuff available now will probably be verboten by the time he reaches the age of majority. If you buy his guns now and raise him up right, the Republic may not be lost afterall.
