YES!!!!
I first caught BRD while in the Infantry. Had been shooting all my life, really appreciated the beauty and functionality of the rifle. Probably didn't help that I'd grown up a Viet Nam history buff. My earliest memory is of the fall of Saigon. |

I wanted one before I found out what a shitty state I live in.
I got in on the .50BMG ban, though. I would not have owned one of those within the next ten years if it wasn't for the ban. |

I owned my first AR15 BEFORE their was even talk of a ban.
There was life before the Crime Bill. |

I just always liked military type weapons. Some say my blood is green. But I owned AR's way before any weapon ban's have been inacted. Also it is well advisable to have and own NATO caliber weapons, when and if the big one ever hits it will still be easy to aquire ammo.

I always thought they looked cool, always wanted one. I bought my first one in '92 to build an Open rifle for USPSA 3-Gun matches.

No. If it wasn't for the ban it would have always been one of those cool things I didn't really need. Now I have a couple and a closet full of mags.

Shortly after I got out of the army, I wanted to buy a rifle. The only rifles I had ever fired was M-16s in the army. Seemed logical to buy a rifle I already knew how to field strip, maintain, clean and fire. So, I bought an AR-15. That was in 1992.

I had always wanted an AR15, but never got around to buying one. In 1993 Bill Clinton gave a speech where he told Congress if they passed the AW ban, he would sign it. I bought my first AR15 later that year.

Was vaguely aware of things like "gun bans" and such things but being a dumb sheeple didn't think that had anything to do with me until I went to find out what I'd need to do in order to buy firearms after 9/11. That's when I discovered that it DID effect me.
 While I can appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship in "traditional" firearms, the functionality, ruggedness and design purpose behind "military style" weapons has a greater appeal for me. I purchased 19 guns while living in California, number 20 was an AR, 2 months after I bought my house here in Montana.  My next few rifles will all fall into the category of "evil" ones (as described by the socialists and grabbers).

I've always wanted an evil black rifle. I'm trying to save up so I can buy a Bushy lower one summer and an upper the next since I can only work during the summer. Worry about the 2008 election and potential subsequent AWB's made me go out and buy a WASR-10 instead of an AR lower last summer. I'd rather have a complete and working EBR RIGHT FREAKIN' NOW than half of one. This summer, I'm grabbing a handgun and a bunch of mags and ammo before it gets any more expensive.
Next summer, Bushy lower and more mags and ammo. Summer 2008, Bushy upper and more mags and ammo. Hopefully by then I'll be able to tell whether or not my fears were justified. Either way, by the time campaign season starts, I should be the proud owner of an AK, an AR, and at least one pistol. After that, assuming another AWB hasn't doomed us all, I'll hopefully have a better job (since I'll have graduated college by then) and can start saving up for a Romak-3 and more handguns. |

I came of age just after the inception of "the ban years". My gun owners lexicon will never be able to shake terms like "preban" and "full capacity magazine" as I have far more years with those words than I do being free from them.
I was blessed in that my father owned a few politically incorrect firearms (a couple Reg. MG's and a few SUR's) and let me shoot them from a young age, but I moved out young and my own interests in black guns didn't really hit until the Clinton Ban was a couple years underway. I got most heavily into it when the very peak of "preban" AR pricing was underway ($2000 for a preban Oly, etc...) and I had absolutely no interest to pay that kind of bread for a telestock and a flash hider. I don't view the expiration of the AWB as a broad political mandate that will continue on ad-infinitum, but rather a window of opportunity that I intend to exploit like a m'fer. It will be back. |

He probably purchased it during ban years, and thus was faced with either buying a postban rifle, or paying outrageous sums for a preban. The only reason that emoticon is appropriate is for their being a ban at all. |

I probably would have bought an AR anyway, but the ban pushed me into the realm of political junkie along with firearm enthusiast. The spectre of an impending future ban does help me plan my purchases, however...

turnned 18 in 94. bans and the talk of bans made it so I had no choice. ban or not I was well on my way to buying ARs and such. only thing that slows me down now and back then is $$$$$$$$

Had a whole lot more interest in military style firearms than "hunting guns." Always did, don't know why.
Regardless of bans, I still would have bought an AR, or two, or three plus FALs and other goodies. I own "hunting guns" (here in PA you can't hunt with a semi-auto rifle) and use them but much prefer my AR15 to my Remington 700 for most applications. |

Pretty much yeah.. And I liked the idea of the look on my extended families faces when I bring it to the Reunion and Shootoff. But now I worry about them stealing it.

not sure, i'd own one some day for sure but as i'm in college and soon to be medical school (i hope) i dont have much $$ available for toys.
i think the reason i got mine now instead of later is not because of the 94 ban, but because a future ban could occur just as easily, and it might even be worse. i didnt want to regret not buying one when i could. |

Yep thats exactly how it went down. Got it in 2000 so the ban was in full effect. It was either $884.00 for my bushy postban or $1200-$1500 for preban. 884 came with hard case 10rd mag sling and he through in 3 30rd mags

Hmmm, I'm a bit suprised. I figured most posts would be like Big Bear's. I was always facinated by military rifles since I was a kid and had a Small Arms of the World book. My favorite was always the M14 and the M16 Commando (as they called it in the book) but never got around to buying them as I had other financial priorities at the time and just figured I'd get one someday, plus I had a brother and friends with them so I always had an opportunity to shoot them. But when the '94 ban came I went out and bought a Mak 90. Then another. Then a couple other types over the years. Didn't actually get my AR until 2000. But I've personally seen the ban create eight new gun owners who kinda liked guns but never really would have gotten around to getting one. Then due to the ban went out and started buying guns. My personal belief is that without the assault weapon bans we'd have maybe 5% of the current number of AR and AK style rifles out there. Hmmm....

"Ban Exposure" and the perpetual stream of news stories during that time was a huge beacon to these kinds of guns, no doubt. Ask any gun shop owner who has been in business for longer than 25 years how many AR's and AK's he sold prior to 89 (and/or 94) and how many afterwards. It's almost like the entire complexion of the industry changed with the bans. Every gun shop used to have an AR collecting dust in the corner, with a primary stock of deer rifles and shotguns. Now, the most profitable shops are just the opposite. |

I have wanted an AR-15 since I was like ten, which is coincidentaly when I bought my first gun mag and realized I COULD have an AR-15. My dad and I made a deal that as long as I kept my grades up and helped around the house/property I would get one when I turned fourteen.
Then the ban happened  I remember actually getting SO mad when that asshat signed the ban that I cried those hot tears, even as a kid I HATED(and still do) Bill Clinton  After that the price went so far up on AR's that there was no way I would get one. I finally got one about 6 years ago

Always liked the AR mostly because they are easy to build and upgrade. My first rifle was [and is] the M1 carbine and the second one was an AR built on a Sendra lower I picked up at a gunshow.

I had always wanted one but kept finding excuses not to buy an AR. Then the AWB passed and I ran down to the local gun store and picked out a Colt 16” AR. I’m sure I would have bought one eventually but the ban threat made me hurry up.
Funny thing is. I was living with my brother at the time. I get home and can’t wait to show him my new toy. He got home about an hour after I did with a new toy of his own. It was the exact same model of AR-15 that I just bought. I must have only missed him at the gun store by about an hour. Great minds think alike. |
