Er, change the manufacturer's password to the router. Best security ever. Netlimiter isnt free, but you can get it if you know how to, easy way to monitor your connection speeds.

if you're using a router, turn on encryption (WEP or WPA if its supported) if not, I don't know.
ETA:Also if you have a router, you can generally look at what devices are connected, and if one of them isn't you, you know when peopel are using it.

I can pull up numerous networks in my neighborhood and see who is locked down from a couple of my wireless computers.  I don't bother logging on to their networks though as I have cable.  If you don't care who is logging onto your network, look at it like this, would you want them downloading kiddie porn on your connection and then have the feds show up at your door and arrest you for downloading it?  It could happen.

Little thing. Unless they can prove you are the only one with access to the computer or you were the one accessing said things there is no case. They've tried it before but it doesnt fly.

If you have a good wifi router like a Linksys(they Suck BTW but better than a no name) or a Dlink lock the MAC addresses. This will prevent MACs not on the list from connecting. Use this in addition to WEP or WPA.

WEP by it's self is a joke. It can be cracked in very little time by any neighboohood computer geek.

What about the RIAA blackmailing people who are accused of downloading music from the internet?  Same thing can happen if you don't lock down your WiFi and I don't think the RIAA cares if it is you or your neighbor if you leave you network open.  Kind of hard for someone who doesn't know how to lock down their system to know if their own kid is doing it or the kid next door but when the RIAA blackmailers serve them because their ISP turned over their name to the RIAA it will be up to the individual to show that it wasn't their service being used.  In a civil court action the proof doesn't have to be beyond a reasonable doubt, just a preponderance of the evidence.

The RIAA has sued a women that doesn't even own a computer. Don't get me started on them and their BS(BTW she's counter suing for extorition and racketeering)

There have been cases in other states,(FL and a few others) where if you used a WiFi network that was not yours you get fined. Depending on your state's computer laws and if you can find out who is using your network you could nail them for some money.
Personally I think that's stupid, if someone want's to have their network wide open it's their fault if they get taught a new meaning to the term violatied. On the other hand "war driving" and breaking through that little protection WEP offers is hacking and can be considered a computer crime.

I was wanting to be altruistic and let people use the bandwidth that I paid for, but wasn't using.  Kind of like sharing a case of beer at a picnic.  It's paid for, I'm not going to use it all, and I don't want it to go to waste.

I don't want anyone poisoning my beer, though!

if this is your home internet that is a very  bad idea.    if you neighbour decides he wants to look at some under age girls.  YOU go to jail not him

ENCRYPT YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION, this is your responsiblity.   the manufactor is not responsible for it.  you are.
