What do you use? I was thinking about a Remington model seven, but the new issue of American Rifleman came today with a nice Kimber 8400 on the cover. Decisions, decisions...

Let's see 'em! Tell me about your deer rifle. Do you use a lever gun, a bolt gun, a shotty?

I use 2.

Stand hunting in woods - Remington 700 in 25.06.
Ground hunting in tobacco fields - Savage 12 in 300 WSM.

If I don't change my mind I'm going to buy a GCS 20" 6.5 Grendel upper for this season.

Works great.  Nothing special in terms of speed, bullet weight, or flash.  But damn, it sure kills good.

Pre-64 model 70 in 308
Ruger 77 Mark II All weather in 30-06
both are sub MOA accurate, great guns.

In OH though we have to use shotties, for that a use an 870 express with an iron sighted slug barrel.

Mine is no longer available--Yugo Zastava Mauser in .30/06, with double set triggers.

My wife has a GREAT Remington 700 in '06, stainless/synthetic, topped with a Leupold 3.5-10X/50mm objective.  It shoots into 3/4" and is a NICE rifle for any kind of hunting.

I've been using my Dad's old 700 for 10 years now and have nothing but wonderful things to say about it.  He gave me a custom built 7 Mag for Christmas last year and we have yet to fire it, so there is a good chance the trusty 700 will be used again next fall.  Right out of the box an amazing rifle, and they can only get better from there on out.

Depends on where I'm hunting.  Smith .44 mag pistol, Rem 700 6.5X55, Rem 700 7.62X39, Rem 700 .308.  Remingtons all have 3X9 VaraX ll scopes.  The Smith is a 4 inch.

What else are you going to shoot?  If you are just targeting white tail, I would recommend a Remington .270.  If you are planning to shoot elk, moose, and bear, I would recommend a Winchester 30.06 at a minimum.

I have taken an elk with a .270, the first year I hunted.

I use a mans rifle for elk now (.375 H&H)

My favorite is a Browning 1885 low wall in 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser with a Burris compact 4x12. It is a sweet little rifle.

#2 is a Ruger #1 in .30-06 with a Nikon 3.5x10x50.

Both rifles will shoot sub MOA with my loads.

Browning A-Bolt in .308 with Leupold Vari-X III 3.5 - 10 glass.

Its really more scope than I need but I love Leupold optics - good stuff.  The rifle is accurate, light and handles nicely.

The next rifle I build for deer hunting ONLY will be a Tikka T3 stainless laminated in either .243 or .308, with a Leupold 3-9x40.  I'm in the process of building a rifle for hunting anything in the world.

I use a Remington model 600 Mohawk .308 cal. It only weighs about 6.5 pounds loaded. The 18" barrel is great for getting through the woods. I can carry it all day without a problem.  I paid $150 for it about 10 years ago.

I hear that they have accuracy problems myself.  That was a few years ago, so I do not know if those problems were resolved.

Fixed it.  A little puny for northern deer.

(NOT saying it won't kill them--the leak hole is just a bit too small.)

It takes mulies with ease, which are a lot bigger than those suitcase whitetails they got around over there

And yes, it is also a great Coyote round, and cougar round (though I use my .460 S&W for cougar now).

x2.  We have deer as big as horses in Illinois.  Rifles are banned, but if they weren't, I'd insist on something .30 caliber at least.

That said, I switched to muzzleloading last year for deer and elk because public land was pretty crowded during modern rifle and I unfortunately don't have the time to go far enough to avoid the people.

Let me ask you this - Is the .308 round as adaptable/flexible as the 30.06 round, so far as ability to take different sized game? I thought I read somewhere it was.
