I am torn.
The AR is really accurate, and mounting optics is really easy. The M14 is durable and reliable. What do you guys think? Thanks, D |
My AR-10 is both durable & reliable. Hands down, the better choice & I love M1As.
My .o2 |
My AR10 has been durable and reliable... |
Always wanted an M1A, but I'm not paying $1500 for a base rifle and $50 for spare mags.
I'll wait 'till the RRA .308's come out. |
keep your M-14 classic. i'm getting an M1A at the end of the month, and at most will put a scope on it. there's something to say for guns that look un-fucked around with. i HATE HATE HATE M1A's/M14's that get M4gerized
M1A hands down, I'd take it over a 5.56 and 7.62 based AR anyday, anytime.

+1 -K |

+1 Some people here must be pimps considering what they do to their weapons. |
D, Have you considered a gas piston .308 AR? Justin |
I would prefer a gas piston AR if available. I know that several are in the works. But, it seems like it will be a while before any are out.
I have been on an accuracy kick since shooting my buddy's LW piston gun. Wow. I got a sub-moa group from 100 yards even with just a 14.5" barrel. |
+1 on getting both...
Get the M1A first and you will not be sorry... I would get the LRB arms one...stronger reciever as it forged, not cast, like the springfield armory one. Either one is good, but the LRB reciever is much stronger. www.lrbarms.com/pages/2/index.htm |
Why wait? |
One of the reasons that current ARs are as accurate as they are is the lack of moving mass above or below the barrel. |
I think you can get the mags for around 10-15 bucks each now.. Besides, the AR-10 uses modified M-14 mags... Don't worry about the cost of the rifle as you can easilyget what you paid for it, if not more if you wish to sell it at some point. Besides, you will probably never wear out this rifle... |
The AR-type guns will be easier to keep accurate. The M14/M1A types are old technology, and needs the attention of qualified gunsmith to keep up accuracy. Plus the manual of arms would be the same for both the AR15/M16 and AR10, a big plus.
True... but I feel that both are worth having in a collection. |
Not entirely true. There are a few tricks you must do to accurize it, but they are relatively cheap. M14/M1A is light-years more reliable than AR15 or AR10. |
Oh yeah, I wish. I had a tough time hiding it from the "other half." Before the the AR10, got banned here in Calif they were in the neighborhoodl of $1,500 already, if you could find one. spartacus2002: Can you please elaborate more on the how the M14/M1A are more accurate than the AR10? I'm not a wiz at this stuff, but you have to have all kinds of expertise to correctly assemble a M14/M1A, and not to mention the correct tools. |

Well LWRC will be releasing their .308 gas piston AR sooner than you think so it might just be worth the wait, if you could hold out a little longer bro. In regards to the comment that the gas piston system inhibits accuracy, that has been debated ad naseum and has been determined to be untrue. You can always stop by the LWRC forum in the Industry section if you have any more questions or concerns. Best Regards, Justin |

CitySlicker,
I shot KnobCreek's LW AR. I was getting sub-moa results. So, I know the potential is there for results even with an extra moving part or two. The results I got were basically as good as any I have seen from DI ARs. As soon as LW gets their 308 rifle to market, I am ready. KnobCreek has been telling me about the one he fired at SHOT. Evidently, it is the jam. I can't wait to get my own. Until then, I will test a bunch of other things while I wait. D |
D, So Charlie burst your piston cherry, huh? Well, whatever you decide, here's a link that I thought you might appreciate: www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=2&f=171&t=150293&page=1. Take care bro, and God bless. Justin |

Should that be in the thread about gun related myths. |

I would go AR-10 or FAL. I have a hard time finding an M1A that feels right as a modern battle rifle. In it's classic configuration, it's unwieldy with antiquated ergonomics. With the new "improvements" it feels awkward and front heavy. I think as a counter sniper weapon, or for long range supressive fire from a fixed position it works. For modern move and shoot type fighting, no thanks.
I had both and dumped the M1A,
it really depends on what you like and are comfortable with, if you like the feeleing of a deer rifle go for the m14, if your more comfortable with the AR platform go for the ar10 as for reliability and durability, dont fool yourself, you are not going to be running around yemen or the jungles of Columbia with no cleaning gear. Both rifles are totaly suitable for civilian use, both are great weapons, |
Go M1A, or go both...I have 3 M1A's and for the 308 I think they're the best platform out there...
M14! I fired an AR in .308 and just didn't care for it to be honest. Now the m14 on the other hand feels right for some reason and I like shooting it better than my AR's.
Of course that may change after the 9mm pistol build but we will see... |
I have a DMPS LR as well (18 barrel,” railed forend, ACOG). It kicks ass. Hasn't missed a beat yet. Also, they are pretty cheap.
AR-10, w/20 inch free floating barrel! if you want to reach out and touch somebody!
+ another... I will be getting an M1A again...one day. |
No wonder you had problems with your scoped M1A, you used that POS scope mount. Put a SEi, Sadlak, or Arms scope mount on it and you're GTG. Some people use crap parts to build a rifle system and then say it's a piece of crap, what do you expect, you used crap parts to build it.
hey I didn't build the rifle like that Springfield armory did. that was a loaded package. I also looked at the price on a good stock and other accessories for the m14 type rifles and thought they cost to much. if I want to change a AR type rifle to a different configuration it is easy relatively cheap and quick. Maybe I could have put some more money into the rifle but it seemed like I could get what I wanted out of the AR platform with less hassle. What I wanted was a semiauto to shoot long range targets at the rifle range and in the woods.
I paid 1400$ for the package deal on the M1A then I was looking at what another 800-1200$ for good mount, rings, stock, and trigger. too much money for a gonna shoot this every now and then rifle. All I need to finish the DPMS was a bi-pod I paid 35$ for off the EE. It already had a free floated barrel, match trigger, and a low mounting platform. Oh and now I can change it to a carbine for the price of a new upper and have two different setups on one rifle. trust me I got some flack from my buds for trading the M1A but I didn't see them ponying up any money for ammo much less new parts.

You could carry two AR15s for the weight of a tricked out SOCOM 16 couldn't you?
I shot the M-14 in the Marines & have shot the M1A as a civilian & currently own an AR-10. So how exactly is the M1A "light years" ahead of the AR-10, please??????? |
That can't be true according to some posts.
