I'm having a carpenter/wood bee problem. Just curious if anyone else here has dealt with these little suckers before and what seemed to be the most effective. Your normal, everyday old wasp/hornet spray doesn't seem to even phase them.

moth balls slowed them down a good bit, but it was in an enclosed space where there wasnt much air movement. those little fuckers do some SERIOUS damage to wood. we were cleaning my dad's warehouse roof (what was left) after the hurricanes in 04, and found that if the bees hadnt been after the roof structure the roof probably would not have failed.

I can't get rid of them. Fortunately the damage is fairly slight and I have never been stung by one. My dogs have eaten a few.

Brake cleaner will take down any thing that flies and leaves no residue behind. Its also cheap.

Try being in a watchtower with a nest of them inside the beams! You have an M-16, BUT ARE NOT ALLOWED TO USE IT!!!!

I didn't get stung, but having to deal with the little bastards without angering the nest can be a PAIN. A sharp, searing, pain!

And then you have to write an incident report about it!!!!

Back when I had the time, we'd circle around my friend's log cabin house for hours with badminton rackets. One good swing cuts' em to pieces

The word is "FAZE", not "phase".

I find that brake cleaner tends to FAZE them rather well.

Look for their home. It'll be a piece of wood with several holes in it about
3/8ths of an inch in diameter.

Get some corks, wait for nightfall, cork up every hole, remove the piece of wood,
and burn it. Carpenter bee problem solved.

Alternative means may involve corking all but the top hole and filling the piece of
wood with something potent. Glue, gasoline, lacquer thinner, maybe even silicone caulk.
Lighting this piece of wood on fire is optional but effective and entertaining.

A tennis racket is good carpenter bee medicine, and fun, too!

You bet they will.

Plugging the holes is just to keep them trapped while the nasty stuff you pour in finishes them off.

Once I found carpenter bees in a 2x4. It was a clean 2x4 with no nails in it so I ran that sucker through the planer.

No more bees!

I did find some probable bee parts in the shavings, though!

Every bee that was exposed when the planer opened up the wood got sucked right out into those razor sharp blades of death-dealing goodness!

spray bee killer in the exposed holes and plug them with steel wool- I had some behind the header piece above our french doors in the back of the house --before I knew it they had drilled in in several places and run the length of the board. I plugged the exits/entrances and gasssed em with bee killer spray --super saturating the steel wool and acceasble areas around the board after about 20 mins of gradually falling frantic BUZZING they never re-occured.
The wasp/bee spray needs time to work on them and the steel wool keeps em bottled up till it does and keeps others from moving in etc --any kind of wood filler/foam they will get through before the bee killer takes effect the steel woll they cant eat or push aside.

Some of the best summer days were Grampa and me doing the same out of the bard on break from splittin wood. Man that sounds like a freaky bad movie.
