All the panic threads about the AWB coming back, the Mexican Revolution of Aztlan 2007, etc, have me thinking, "How much is enough?"

The question is, how many loaded mags per rifle would you need in an SHTF situation?

Concieveably, you would have time or opportunity to reload some during a lull or after the action was all done.

If you're going to stick it out inside a house or compound of some sort: as many as you can fit and fill with ammo.

If you're on the move: as many as you can carry without overburdening yourself.

mounted? as many as I could stuff into the truck.  dismounted?  for the AR: probably 13, FAL only 7 or 8

You probably can do with one magazine.

If it's a zombie horde, that's a more realistic situation to require getting one or more of those tactical 3 magazine pouches.

You guys are saying 12 - 25, based on where you are and how you plan on supporting the weapon system, and that is easily double what I currently have. Furthermore, if I am on the move, I have to think about how I would carry 13 mags - what do they weigh filled with cartridges?

What kind of vest or holder would carry that quantity of mags? Notice that I'm not even considering carrying the JLD PTR 91 because of the weight of the rifle and the ammo...

Hell, I'm 41, and not Mr. SooperSoldier.

I have 15 for each AR, 10 for AK, and 10 for FAL.

Your scenario is too vague.    I have trouble envisioning a situation where more than 3 per weapon would be needed,  if you pick your shots.

However,  it doesn't hurt to have much more.  Might even turn out to be a good investment.

Can carry 12 on the vest and another 12 or so in a ruck if on foot.

If more than 12 mags is needed to eliminate a threat or evade to safety, it's bayonet time and that ain't good.

no, 12 in the vest, one in the AR OR one in the FAL and 6 in the vest.  I use a surplus R.A.C.K. system, works great.  HSGI makes great setups as well.

as many as I can carry, but on the move it would be hard to carry 87 it might get a little heavy

4 in a subload CQB pouch and 3 in a belt pouch as well as 1 in the rifle. That is 8mags=240rds. Enough to engage and retreat from most firefights and not so heavy as to slow you down much.

If you need more, stripper clips are always an option in a buttpack or backpack.

In home stripper clips are a good way to reload rapidly as well.

I currently have about 3K on stripper clips and almost 1K in mags. Tomorrow I am taking my son and his college buddies to the range though so that number will diminish substantially.

Bringing an AK with about 500 rds loaded and maybe a Krink as well. We'll see. My daughter's boyfriend called and wants in on the action as well so I will probably have to bring something else also.

As many as you think you need, plus a few spares.

This is an individual preference sort of thing...just like asking which hunting rifle/handgun/whatever is best...

I would buy as many mags as possible just in case of a new AWB popping up in 08. As far as carrying, it would depend upon shooting style. Do you have a spastic trigger finger? Do you see your AR as a SAW? Or is your weapon a single shot minister of death praying for war? Are you naturally calm in stressful encounters? Once you can determine your averge ammo usage, you can figure out your average ammo need. I would figure that most MZBs would find another target when their friends start dropping. You don't have to kill all of the attackers; just some of them.

SHTF is a pretty vague term--are we talking katrina, or mad max?

i'd love to have 100, but that number is prioritized pretty far down the list, and way behind things like heavy-duty gas cans, extra water filter elements, and night vision.

in texas, i have 15...

3 on the belt,
6 in the vest,
6 in the rifle case.

and 1 9rd range mag.

but there are a few more at the house in MT.

I guess it depends on how many you can carry.

12 for me.

30-rd mags weigh roughly 1.1 lbs each. My rig carriers 8 mags (4 2-mag pouches). GI mag pouches carry 3 per pouch. I'd prefer to not carry more than 9 mags (8+1) for any real distance. If I were foot mobile long distance, 5+1 should do it as long as you aren't Ramboeing it.

Now if I'm hunkered down and defending my home turf, 8+1 plus as many mags as I can carry. Even 9 mags is going to seriously heat up the barrel. By that point I'll either be dead, the problem will have moved on, or I'll have won and can refill with stripper clips.

Still, having 20-25 mags ensures you have plenty for training, damaged/lost mags, etc.

Unless we're talking a "life long" SHTF here, where you've got 0 chance of resupply...

As many as you'd need to shoot three guys in a combat situation, times two. So, I figure about 6.

Realistically, if you've got to shoot more than that, you're dead anyway. Better save some weight so you've got a bit more speed to increase the odds.

I carried 10 mags in Afghanistan with 2 mags in my M4(cliped together side by side)

and a 6 mag bandolier in my assault pack.

At home, I would keep all mags loaded, minus the cmag(neat toy I would never use it in SHTF).
