I have both a Remington 870 and a Mossberg 500 both in 12 gauge. The Remington 870 has more solid, Steal reciver, More mods, and comes in 3.5inch magnum.
Mossberg 500 is lighter though it also came drilled and taped. I don't know how to make a poll. |
It has a stolen reiver, whatever a reciver is? Coems? |
When you try to make fun of people it is important to do it right. I spelt it reciver not reiver. Well in my case spell it wrong. Edit: spelt is a word. Like the kings grey our gray. |

or maybe you could spell it receiver and get it right...... but i'm not a spelling nazi so i really don't give a shit |

ETA: You fixed it - no fair! |
Clearly. |
Okay, you got me. I had spelled it correctly originally, then tried to change it to match you and fat fingered it. |

sonofabitch! i was hoping nobody would get in before the edit and point out that i am an idiot as well! |

Lighten up, Larr. At least he didn't call it an *&^%^&^$ AR-10. |

Is this a spelling thread or a shotgun thread?
I own a Winchester 1300 Defender. I'm kida prtial to it!! Rem 870, though, is a great shotgun. Mossy's are OK. I just don't like this top safety on mossy's. |
Are the winchesters still made in america? I saw one at the Wal-Mart. 260$. I got 550$ burning a rather large hole in my pocket.
Since it's in GD and not the Shotgun Forum, I'd say more the former than the latter. |
Not made at all anymore, along with other models... |
So if I was to purchase one would it's value go threw the roof? |
The Winchester 1300 I have is only about a year old and it was made in New Haven, Conn. If you can get one for that price.....Jump on it!!! They are great shotguns and aren't made anymore! |
between the 870 and the 500 the 870 is a better made gun. that said for the difference in cost i am not sure it's that much better.
both guns are well made and more than capable for most tasks you'd need a shotgun for. i have owned both. i kept my 590a1. |
I have the 870 and I would trade it for a mossberg...I like the top mounted saftey.
Yes. That plant just closed & the Winchester '94s, 1300s, and 70s are no longer in production (other models will continue to be produced overseas). FN/Herstal owns the brand and the US plant was losing them money, or so they said... www.jobrelatedstuff.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=449928 |

870, just by default.
I carry one at work in the car. Muscle memory, familiarity... So I bought one for home. I do like the 870 more than the mossy. I like it with the wood stocks, no extended tube, just bone stock. |
I love my Mossy 5 Hunert.
I'd actually suggest the Mossy 590 to compare to the 870. I got my 500 loaded up with mods.... -18" Barrel -Shotforce collapseable stats -Tac Star side saddle -Shotforce but stock shell holder -Tac Star vert forend I absolutely love it. |
870 more common, less parts maybe?, but definitly easier to clean, I like the 870 safety better.
YMMV |
I have both Remington 870 and Mosseberg 590A2, here are my observations based on tactical usage:
Remington 870 Likes Smooth action Slightly heavier, but balanced at receiver Cross bolt safety, great with a big button or extended safety, right hander thou Can unload with the pump slide back Mosseberg Likes Slightly lighter Action release button, quick slug exchange Comes standard with ghost ring Remington Dislikes Action release button location Not Southpaw friendly Mosseberg Dislikes Balance forward (heavier barrel) Build quality, not as good as Remington Center located safety, not pistol grip friendly Aluminum receiver (no-good for side saddle) WATCH OUT for the 590A1 and 500 plastic trigger group, that is their weak link. I personnelly like the 870, I knew a few that will swear by their Mosseberg. At high intnesity training, one would see almost a 60% to 40% Remington / Mosseberg mix, and normally the Mosseberg have slightly higher failure rate, but not much. |
Center located safety, not pistol grip friendly
Aluminum receiver (no-good for side saddle) quote] I consider the center located safety a plus. My Mossy's pistol grip is fantastic. My side saddle works fine. Very nice compare/contrast though. Nice post. |
I don't know about the newer Moss guns, but my friend had one was 15 years old, and the safety switch is made of plastic, and broke. It almost ruined our Sat. day shooting session, except that my friiend fashion a termporary work-around out of baling wire.

I vote for the Mossberg 590. Although I've owned 500's in the past, but sold them due to wear and tear--what company makes a plastic safety they KNOW is going to break in two weeks--the 590 is a different animal. My unit got some a couple of months ago. Thicker barrel, steel safety, everything feels heavy duty. If they made a longer barrel, it would be my new duck gun.
I have owned a 20" Mossberg 590 in the past - very nice shotgun.
I currently own a REM/870 Magnum Express with an 18" police barrel with rifle-sights. I keep it loaded with 3" 00-buckshot magnums in my bed room closet . It is also a very nice shotgun. Oh yea, stay out of my house when I'm asleep. |
i'm partial to mossbergs myself, but either would be a fine choice
870 because the receiver is steel just as God intended it to be.
I have had a 500 for over 20 years and a 870 for about as long. The Remington is much more dependable. Mossberg uses too many plastic parts in the trigger group. Mine broke twice before 1000 rounds, and then the safety broke a few hundred later. Two friends had trigger parts break within a week of each other, an their guns were new. I do like the location of the Mossberg’s safety though. My brother’s Mossberg has never given him a problem and it has been his only shotgun for 12 years. I have put a lot of shells through my 870 and never had a problem with it. Works day in and day out. I know the military model of the Mossberg have steel part in the trigger group. Friends in Iraq have used them, they held up, I still don’t trust them my self. I’m more confident in the Remington.

You don't need a safty. I have this problem where the 3rd round doesn't come out of the magazine tube on the first pump but it does on the second. |
550 dollars?
Go order a Remington Police Magnum, and call it a day. |
