Basically, the difference between CD-Rs and DVD-Rs is storage capacity.  CD-Rs will hold 700MB, while DVD-Rs will hold about 4.5GB, and dual-layer DVD-Rs will hold about twice that.

The most important question is, "What kind of burner do you have?"

Heck if I know, it's a Del 8400 computer, how can I find out what the burner is?

The compatible formats are usually marked on the front of the drive.  The model would certainly be helpful, but it might not be there.  If there isn't anything there, you'll have to pop your case open and look on the drive (probably on the top).  There should be a label with the manufacturer and model number.

Dell 8400, huh?  Looks like a recent model, judging from Dell's website.  It's probably a DVD burner, but the only way to really be sure is to find the model number of the drive.

You can read DVDs, but only write to CD-R or CD-RW then.

That's another way of doing it.

Not on mine. If I look at My Computer it shows my DVD burner as "Compact Disc".

You can put the video files on disk, or you can burn VCD (Video CD) and play them in your DVD player if it is compatible, but you will only get about an hour's worth of video with VCD.

CD-R/W means you get 700mb of storage, versus more with a DVD. Most DVD players will play stuff in the VCD format, and the newer ones can play many more formats. AVI, MPEG, WMV. Check the manual for your DVD players to see what they can play back.

I'd skip the el-cheapo brands. Try to get Taiyo Yuden disks; they are widely considered the best.

About 50 Cents each if you get 50+.

Yes but only small ones as a Video CD.

If it is larger than 700MB it won't fit.
