The thread about the Russian Military Parade reminded me about this. I know Mexico has the same style parades where all the troops are marching down the street.

So how come the US don't have big national Military Parades?

I think it would be great to show off all the new Hardware, Uniforms ect and would make people have more faith in the Military

We do have cool fly-overs at things like the SuperBowl and stuff, not sure why no parades either.  July 4th would be a good day for one.

I thought it was called Veterans day or Memorial day
You can also go to any military installation on Armed Forces day (usually open to public with proper ID) and view the military in action

True, but I mean like a big national Event where all the news channels go live and stuff like that.

Anytime I think of a military parade, I think of countries like the past USSR, Nort Korea, Iran, China and other countries that feel the need to show their military might off. I get the feeling they are cowering in our vast glory and they get little wee wee syndrome.

When I was a kid we had a parade for our town's Sesquicentennial. They had tanks and soldiers marching and stuff; it was pretty cool. I seem to remember my father getting some movie footage of it, but I haven't seen it in ages.

They had a cool display set up at the high school before the parade. They had Nike missile launchers set up, they had tanks that they let the kids climb on (I remember climbing into an M7 Priest and elevating the barrel... ), they had a Rascal missile on a trailer, and there was a Navy F7U Cutlass that they trucked in, too.

I remember two F7Us flying over in formation, an H-21 helicopter doing a rescue demonstration at the Town Park, and a small arms demo including machine guns and a BAR at the park. There were a lot of displays inside the high school, as well. The parade was the high point, though. That was a long time ago, and I never saw another one quite like it.

Because all our troops are occupying the rest of the world?

We hold our military parades in Baghdad, Teheran, & Damascus.

the power of the US is supposedly projected by our people and economy.  the military is not our major (official) claim to world power, but rather a by product of it.  usually the shittier the country, the more they flaunt their military, because that's all they've got.  we choose to flaunt our prosperity instead

Well when I was stationed in Berlin Germany back in the 1980's we used to have big parades there every
year with 2 of the other 3 ocupation forces (GB and france)  it was quite the show.
stateside usally parades are on base (with heavy equipment)  It probly has alot to do with post vietnam
feeling about the military. I know when I joined we where still treated like dogs. (1980) and things have improved since then thankfully.

I remember when Clinton was in office he had parades with military marching down the streets of DC. Seemed to fit his megalomaniac attitude

Hell yeah!

Seriously - big military parades seem to be the stuff of dictatorships and totalitarian states, not free democracies.

The union (United Sailors Soldiers Airmen and Marines 1776)

There's some dispute going on in Ireland over whether or not they really want a military parade on the anniversay of the Easter Rising. Glorifying violence, and all that.

The other half says that it's a good idea because (a) it raises the public profile of the Defense Forces, and (b) also reminds people that Irish independence came because people took up arms and risked their lives.
