what would it be?
citizenship is not a birthright if your parents are not citizens
It would be one that expresses clearly that any interpretation of other amendments should be in the direction of recognizing individual rights and not taking them away.
THE RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED.
The individual right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
bout time we had something to protect our rights as gun owners.... |
That the original 14 Amendments , known as The Bill of Rights, cannot be altered, amended, or re-written in any way, shape, or form. And that these 14 Amendments will be the basis for the "Laws of the Land". |
or possibly Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of production and trade... As suggested by an excellent book. |
i would fix the FREAKING commerce clause!!!!
"CONGRESS ONLY HAS THE POWER TO REGULATE INTERSTATE TRADE IN TERMS OF GOODS WHICH CROSS STATE LINES!! CONGRESS HAS NO POWER TO REGULATE GOODS WHICH ARE PRODUCED AND KEPT WITHIN THE BORDERS OF A SINGLE STATE!!" yes, the amendment should be added in caps with exclamation points for emphasis. |
I may have to pop another bag of popcorn for this... (My last post on this, BTW, just rubber-necking)
Atlas Shrugged? |

I wouldn't know where to begin.
I'd probably start by getting together with a bunch of Very Smart People and writing up a draft whose intent is to clearly define the working principles of our Democratic Republic and also to identify the mechanisms by socialism and communism operate in any form, with the goal being to write an amendment that provides for mandatory execution for anyone who actively attempts to impose any form of socialism or communism within the United States. In essence, this would outlaw the Democratic Party, and along with it, say goodbye to the restrictive gun laws that we'd all like to see gone. If I could write another amendment, it would be one that grants FULL citizenship, including voting rights and the right to run for and hold public office, ONLY to those who volunteer for military service and complete a two year service term under honorable conditions. It would be ENTIRELY voluntary. You can quit at ANY MOMENT during your term but it's irrevocable and your full citizenship is down the toilet if you do. Yes, this is right out of Robert A. Heinlein's book, "Starship Troopers". CJ |
Upon arrest, all illegal immigrants shall be ground into cat food.
so those of us like myself who were disqualified to serve based on medical grounds get to remain second class citizens for the rest of our lives? |
I think any military where you can "quit at any moment" is pretty pointless |
No no, I think the best single amendment would be to repeal the Income tax amendment and return ALL DIRECT taxation authority from the Fed to local and state legislatures, thereby in one fell swoop de-funding the bureaucrats who are beholden to their own considerable number of civil servants and unions and return vast power to the states which would now have a place at the table and make local and state politics red hot, 85% participation again.
Done...that was easy. |
Term limits at all levels of government.
Line item veto. Constitutional abolition of every Federal office that is not specifically authorized & enumerated for the Federal level. Specific and detailed list of where each taxpayer's funds went -- including a statement of deficit, and where the funding is coming from. Fair Tax. |

I have a few possibilities.
1. In order to prevent the development of tyranny, all citizens not previously convicted of a felony have the right to own any weapon that they choose and to carry on their person or operate said weapon. 2. The Citizens of the United States have an inalienable right to privacy which is limited only when that right threatens the life of another, to include the unborn fetus. 3. The right to citizenship by birth is guaranteed only to those born of parents that are legal citizens or guests of the United States. (This I left a little more open than was previously mentioned because there are situations such as mine with my mother being on a green card[German] and my father being US Army) 4. No governmental body shall make any laws restricting the free exercise of religion, nor restricting the display of religious articles in any private or governmental facility. 5. This constitution and the rights guaranteed under this constitution apply only to U.S. Citizens and legal guests of the United States. Any citizen captured or arrested committing act of agression against the United States loses protection of these rights. That is it for the moment, but subject to later additions.... |
"[my name here] will henceforth be paid the sum of 10 million a year, tax free, by the US Government to acknowledge his awsomeness. He will pay no taxes. No federal law will apply to him. BATF agents must bow before his mighty presence. Also, free candy every Tuesday."
I think I could live with that. |
There is one major flaw in this. What of the people that truly desire to serve, but are physically unable to. Your amendment would deny the possibility of citizenship to all handicapped people. Say, some one is born with a defective arm. They are no less patriotic or intelligent than an able bodied individual but would be denied their right to vote. If that right to vote is then automatic for all handicapped people, then the discrimination would be to those that are able bodied but do not desire to pursue a military career. What about those that choose to be fire fighters or LEO instead of the military? |
The drafters of the 14th said explicity in their speeches and writings that children born of diplomats and any one in the country illegally would not be citizens by way of their birth in the U.S. The Amendment that started our downfall was the direct election of senators. Instead of representing states, they began to represent special interests |
"The wealth, property, and earnings of any one individual, group of individuals, business, corporation, or other entity shall not, under any circumstances, be taken from them to be given to any other individual, group of individuals, business, corporation, or other entity for any reason."
There, that (if actually followed) destroys socialism. |
So if I am a kindergarden teacher in a public school and a member of the church of brutal double penetration, the wall of my classroom can be adorned by holy photographs depecting the act for which my church was named? Sweet. |
My amendment would be to void any amendments enacted after the Tenth and specifically include severe criminal penalties (double for Congressmen) for abrogating the original intent of the Consitution.
so, let's return to slavery and no voting rights for women ???? |
Service comes in many forms- one need not neccessary serve in combat arms type employment to gain citizenship. An army needs cooks, doctors, accountants and the like, providing options for those not able to participate otherwise. |
Not in "Starship Troopers." It specifically states that (a) ANYone must be accepted for service, if they present themselves for such service, REGARDLESS of physical handicap. And if the government must create a job for you, it must do so... and (b) the only conceivable reason for denying any person for service would be that person's inability to understand the volunteer's oath of loyalty (i.e., mental deficiency). One of my favorite books, by one of my favorite authors. |

The 14th Amendment is rather important as a protection of citizens. Section 1 is the relevant part, the other sections are the teeth and have never been used. Womens suffrage is also rather important, as is the direct election of senators, succession if the president is incapacitated, the 24th eliminates the poll tax, which was fairly common until 1964, the 26th allows 18 year olds to vote and the 27th prohibits Congress from raising their own salaries.
The Federal Government has exactly three powers: Taxing, Spending and Commerce. In removing the Commerce Clause, you remove that from which nearly all of its power stems. Do so at your own risk. Proposed Ammendment 28: Section 1. No person shall comment on this Constitution unless they have read it, and be able to demonstrate an understanding of both its Purpose and Effect. Section 2. This Amendment shall be inoperative unless it be ratified by three quarters of the States within seven years from the date of the submission hereof to the states by Congress. |
i never said i wanted to remove it. i said i wanted to fix it, and make the language more specific in order to prevent the abuses of the clause which we see today. |
I don't want to see a return to slavery. Our Goverment is a republic, not a democracy. The basic unit that our govement was built on was the family. The head of each family should be the one voting for the intrests of that family. |

Wanna show me any document (e.g. the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, Federalist Papers, Proceedings of the Constitutional Convention) that says this. I swear, the more I read some of these posts, the more I understand why the Libs think that Republicans want to create a theocracy... |
6. Any one that reaches the age of majority (18)shall have all rights to posess or consume any product which is legal to consume within the U.S. Any one under the age of majority shall be able to consume those products under supervision of their parent or guardian. It is BS that 18 is old enough to kill in defense of the nation but not drink. Also, (having been raised in Germany) I had access to Alcohol at an extremely young age. Because of this, I don't have the problem with alcohol that many here face. The "forbidden fruit" syndrome that turns so many into alcoholics. Hell, I used to go to the store to buy te stuff for my parents when I was 7 years old. |

1] End entitlements
2] Limit immigration and put an end to anchor babies. Only children born to citizens of the United States would become citizens. |
Where in the world did you get theocracy out of a mention of family? |
I'm all for have some type of test or requierment to be in place for people to vote. I mjust want to keep freeloading dumbasses (and corrporations too) from affecting public policey. I'd also like a law regarding spell checking, or better, redo english so it is phonetic spelled only. |
the drinking age is up to the state they an make it 18 if they whanted to the fed gove bullies them to make it 21 by takeing federal mony for roads away but the state could still make it 18 if they whanted to
you know as well as i do that if they had noncompliance from the states, they'd just use the commerce clause as justification for making a federal law mandating a drinking age of 21. |
i dont think ther needs to be another amendment the gov just needs to stick with any thing not coverd by the constitution is up to the state and not force the state to do anything
No law may be enacted nor enforced where no party other than the actor has suffered demonstrable grievances as a direct result of the action.
(In other words, no more victimless crimes) |
i dont think the gov whold change the drinking age first they dont set it second the way they handel it know would save them mony if the state changed it to below 21 |
Hrmm. Whenever I hear someone start to prattle on about how women should not vote because the man is the "head of the household" they are usually pretty religious. Furthermore, when they say baseless shit like the "basic unit that our govement(sic) was built on was the family," they are almost always fundamentalists. If I was wrong about postpostban, then I am sorry, but to feign shock at that assumption based on what he wrote is a bit disingenuous, don't you think? |
the federal government would have no problem at all using the commerce clause to set a national minimum drinking age of 21. "underage drinking causes increased rates of automobile accidents. this has the effect on interstate trade of raising insurance rates nation-wide. thus, under the federal government's power granted by the commerce clause, the new national drinking age wil be 21 years of age." that would easily be upheld in the supreme court. the federal government's reasoning in the Raich case was FAR more flimsy than what I posted above, but the supreme justices still agreed with it. |

Several of you have made good points regarding the fact that not all who want to serve in the military will be able to for various disability-related reasons.
I'd amend my idea to include other avenues of governmental service for those people. If you can think and communicate, there'd be something you could do. However, the able-bodied would not normally be expected to take desk jobs unless their mental abilities made them more of an asset than their physical capacity. I'd try to make the most of the potential of each person. A totally volunteer service is a great idea. People who are there and fighting because they WANT TO are the ones who are going to be the best fighters. There would be one limitation on the volunteerism, too, and that would be that once you're deployed into an actual combat situation, you're no longer a volunteer until that particular situation has been resolved. When your deployment orders come, you're locked in. It'd be hard to write that all up concisely as one amendment, though. CJ |

All representatives and senators whose names do not rhyme with "Ron Paul" or "Tom Coburn" shall be immediately removed from office, tarred and feathered, and thrown in jail to serve one life sentence for every unconstitutional law that they have ever voted for.
All current federal laws are hereby repealed. Congress shall hereby assemble for a maximum of one week per year, and may only pass ten laws per year. |
I don't see the word family anywhere in the Constitution, which leads me to the conclusion that you need to get back in your lane. |

I see a lot of mention of religion playing a role in issues where somebody finds themselves debating somebody they disagree with, and it usually degenerates into this: "You religious hypocrites! If you think this has nothing to do with religion, that's your opinion, because it is a FACT that it does, even though I'm the first to mention it!" So to put it more strongly: WTF? |

Cats deserve better than that. |
