“Aquí estamos; no nos vamos!” – the chant was chorused by about 200 people holding a warm-up yesterday for today's big march for immigrant rights.

The words mean, “We're here; we're not going away” and were shouted in response to proposed legislation that would make being in the United States illegally a felony.

Christian Ramirez from the American Friends Service Committee organized yesterday's event at Chicano Park in San Diego, saying he initially had expected 500 to 1,000 participants. Ramirez tempered that prediction yesterday, saying 200 were expected, and police estimated the crowd at about that many.

Thousands are anticipated at today's march, which starts at Balboa Park.

When the marchers took to the streets yesterday, they were accompanied by police motorcycles and patrol cars.

The group spent more than an hour walking in the mostly Latino Barrio Logan neighborhood, where they were greeted enthusiastically. But first, they spent more than an hour in the park, listening to Ramirez and other speakers and watching a troupe of Aztec dancers.

Ramirez noted later that although the protest of the proposed bill, House Resolution 4437, is led by Latinos, the protest also is embraced, as evidenced in the park, by people of all ethnicities.

Most carried signs, and two, Allen McAfee and Antonia Davis, both from the San Diego Puppet Insurgency, bore 3-foot-tall papier-mâché heads attached above their bodies by elaborate riggings to note the hundreds of women who have died mysteriously in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez.

Others carried signs memorializing the 4,000 people who have died crossing the border in the past 20 years.

Ramirez called the border crossers “our brothers.”

He rejected the idea of negotiating for changes in the legislation, saying it was beneath the dignity of the people affected.

Another chant rang out: “El pueblo unido jamas será vencido!” – “The people united cannot be defeated” – and it was followed by shouts of “Sí, se puede!” – “Yes, we can.”

Participants came from all over the county.

Francisco Pascual, 16, and Carolina Salinas, 17, were among two dozen students from Fallbrook High School.

Tina Jillings said 55 people had come from Vista.

Jillings carried a banner in Spanish that read, “Rights Committee of Vista,” and she called the proposed legislation, currently on hold in Congress, a “racist law” that is unconstitutional.

Fernando Suarez del Solar of Escondido, whose only son, a Marine, was killed in Iraq, said it isn't fair for the United States to recruit Latino youths for the military but threaten to deport their taxpaying parents.

Today's march is to start at 2 p.m. at Sixth Street and Laurel Avenue in Balboa Park and proceed to the County Administration Building, 1600 Pacific Highway.

FoxNews "Big Story" was showing video footage of the Dallas march....the gal who does that show was going on and on about how: " ...This march is filled with nothing but American flags..."

Funny , but while she was saying that....several Mexican flags came into the picture, one flag was American on one side/Mexican on the other.

There was even some stupid beaner waving a Guatamalan flag this time....

Damn, if this govt had any balls about it , they'd have INS set up at the end of the march with a bunch of those buses left over from Katrina.....the destination sign flipped to "Mexican Border"

I saw that Big Story today, and now officially hate that bitch who hosts it.  She was obviously in favor of these protests and the motives behind it.  She said "They just was a compromise, so why not let them have it?"  She was clearly supportive of the whole damn thing.  Fucking cunt.
