Hello All

I found an injured dove in my yard. I am not sure if it is a domestic dove that has gone ferral or a wild dove.

It has a weak right leg. It was sitting under my bird feeder, so it had food. It sat for two days and did not fly off. So I picked it up and put it in a cage with food and water. It's been inside for a night and has been eating drinking and shitting. I need to get it a bigger cage.

Its poo looks normal it's not watery and it doesn't look sick.

What can I do to help this bird out? I can't keep it long term. I have an inside cat and he is already eye balling it. I have the cage covered now to give the bird some calm.

So how should I procede?

If you want to invest the time, keep taking care of it and see if it recovers.

If not, eat it.

Give it a week to heal. If it doesnt recover kill iit.

The only thing to do is heal it until it can fly .

Then shoot it on the wing when it flies away .
Anything less just isnt sporting

You could also call the wildlife service - they might have a vet's or other interested person's name who might take the bird.

It's nice of you to care for the animal.

I think it's considered a crime, in Tennessee, to take posession of a live game animal or a dead game animal out of season.

Keep it in the cage for a few days and release it. It aint worth the hassle with The Man.

Hold bird body in left hand. Grab bird head in right hand. Twist hands until pop is heard. Remove feathers and wings and follow one of the recipes above.

I usually just grasp the body in left hand, pinch neck with right thumb and forefinger, yank and off comes the head. twisting is too much effort

That being said, I'd never eat an obviously injured animal unless *I* am the one that injured it.

I know Doves are tasty, but my wife named the damn thing. So I can't kill it.

I have a buddy with the National Park Service and Smokey Moutian National Park. He suggested that I get in contact with the University of Tennessee Veternary hoaspital. They take in an d rehabilitate birds.

If it is a mourning dove, it is a federally protected migratory bird.

Be careful who you show/give it to and keep in under wraps no matter what you do with it.

I don't know if it is a mourning dove or if it is some other sort of feral dove. I have got an appointment with the UT Vetrinary Hospital for tomorrow.

I have it in a cage with food and water for now, it is in the front yard in the sunlight. I got some advice from a guy who races homing pigeons and raises domesticated doves, so I think I can keep it alive till the apointment tomorrow.

The guy told me to feel it's croop to see if it is eating. If it is eating it will probably be ok. He said a lot of the birds go into shock and get infections when they get injured. I felt it's croop and it has food in it, it has been drinking water too. It's poo is a bit yellow, the bird racer said the yellow poo is a sign of infection.

I will keep you up to date.
