She was in the makeshift shed next to my garage. She made a nest in a bin containing my daughter's outdoor toys. Mrs SubnetMask said the varmit had do go, so I called upon JMB and his holy 1911. The Raccoon O' Truth revealed that it took 3 rounds of .45 230gr FMJ to properly eradicate this particular pest.
Not suprisingly, the jacketed rounds made clean .45" holes though both the raccoon and the wall of a dilapidated wood shed (I'm going to tear it down one of these days). An expanding round would have been a better choice, but I wasn't going to waste carry ammo on a furry pest. As I approached the shed, the raccoon was laying in her nest loooking at me with her head tilted. She was kind of cute. Anyway, she got some .45 lovin' center of mass. Much to my suprise, she started panting. I'll be damed. I kind of felt sorry for her, so I popped her again. At this, she was visibly upset and attempting to escape. What a trooper. She was panting really quickly now. I figured she was close to dying, but I'm kind of a softie. One more round did her in. Lessons learned: Maybe a rifle isn't such a bad idea. Federal .45 FMJ sails right through coons. There is a direct correlation between rounds required, and patience on hand. Head shots are hard, when the target is squirming. Shooting varmits is fun. EDIT: You guys are ruthless.

Racoons are tough critters. I had to shoot one a couple of months ago and much like your recently departed guest he soaked up 2 center mass .40 cal 180gr Hydrashoks before the third one found his noggin.
The next one is getting the .223 treatment. |

Well... ...animals react to things by instinct. If a man is shot, he will say "Oh my God, I've been shot!". When an animal is shot, they remark "Ow, that hurts".  Shot placement is another consideration. I have no idea where the vitals are on a raccoon. I used ball ammo. It made a clean hole. 9mm ball ammo would have likely done the same, but with a slightly smaller hole. This little encounter of mine only shows how one raccoon reacted to being shot 3 times with a .45. Humans are a different animal, altogether.

They can be tough S.o.B.s. I had one hit center of mass at 3 feet with a 3" 12 gauge 000 buck. After spreading his innards all over the back wall of the shed much to my gals delight, he rolled down the stairs, hit the landing and proceded to growl and chew on his own guts for about 3 minutes before expiring. I'm not surprised .45FMJ took more than one.

20 Gauge would've done the job better.
In my Snake 'O Truth thread 7/12 shot did the job on a snake. A shotty is the best Varmint gun AFAIK a 1911 might be a little overkill. |

Raccoons are TOUGH critters!!
Shot one with a 22 once, first shot to the head and the thing turned around and started walking away. 2nd shot to the head it "fell" but its tail was still wagging. took 3 more rounds till it quit mooving, though I think it was really dead after the 2nd shot and was just making "death" movements from a CNS shot. |

Wow, all I ever used was a .22 and it seemed to do the job. I didn't know how lucky I was that I didn't get attacked and killed.
I once shot and killed one with a pellet rifle and it only took 1 shot. Maybe they are harder to kill when you walk up right up to them and shoot them in there bed while they are looking at you. I wouldn't know as that is kind of like shooting quail on the ground and I don't do that either. |

One night me and my next door neighbor came home from the bar to find a coon on the fence right by my head when I got out of the truck. We got to BB gun and shot her off the fence. It took 26 shots from 2 feet away to finally kill her. She took 6 shots to the head and 12 to the heart area. Kinda kelt bad seeing her suffer like that thats why I shot her so many times in the head. Even with 6 shots to the head her got up and ran in circles when we went to pick her up. (thought she was dead). Funny part was it was garbage night. So, we put it under the lid of a neihgbors can across the street so when the garbage men picked up the garbage the coon would be right in their face. Would of loved to see that the next mourning.

I have a big raccon problem where I live, eating my dogs food and getting into garbage and whatnot.
Best round I have found for them - .223 with a 55g Nosler Ballistic Tip. One shot stoppers, as far as raccons are concerned. |

There is a raccoon that lives in the small wooded area behind my house. He's a friendly little critter. Raccoon have to be one of the most clever animals in the kingdom.

there have been times where Ive emptied a mag out of my 10/22 or S&W 22a into a possums center mass and watched it escape as I reloaded..  And this can hardly be called the raccoon o truth. At least Ol Painless remembers to set up a camera before he starts blasting away.. |
