I am 18yo and graduating from high school this spring.  for numerous reasons I have tenatively decided to

join the Marines, however, the job which I am interested in is that of a scout/sniper..........so i guess

what i am wondering is: is there an age limit on this position, is it a job to be applied for or one you

get selected for, and the question my parents have badgered me about career options once I get out

of the Corps???????????

The other possible routes I have thought of are demolitions and eod but would really like the s/s position.

Have also thought about the sf but am not ready[maturity, and mentally] and also don't want to bad
enough to tough out the trainging.

Any suggestions are appreciated

Career options once you get out? I am guessing you don't want to be in the military for your whole life? A career option is to stay in the military and change your career direction. Go to college while in the military and become a lawyer or doctor. Go to flight school and become a pilot. Get a degree and go on to become a commissioned officer.

You could leave the military and go to college. Getting a bachelor's degree is a good thing.

I am not sure right now how long I would like to remain enlisted.........thus i am exploring my options...........and there is no way in heck that i will become a lawyer...........if I become a doc[which i am in no way interested] i would stay in the military

It seems everyone wants scout sniper....

It also seems that scout sniper is just as rough if not worse than sf training. Take it from a guy who never served but hung around military guys my whole life.

Your 18, tell your parents to get over you wanting to be an elite badass who will probably go to the sandbox.

If you are looking to get in and then get out, I'd say go into the computer or communication fields, possilby military police if you are interested in law enforcement.

Going into the Marines with the intention of being a scout/sniper is like going into college with the intention of being a Senator.

Sure, it could work out that way..

Like i said before i am not sure yet[about how long to be in the military] however, trainign is really not my fear[i can do anything i want if i really want to]  what I need to find out is the normal route to achieve my goal[cuz i don't put too much trust in recruiters]  and I don't want to enlist to find out i have to drive trucks until i'm old enough to be enrold in sniper school[you have to be 21yo to train for sf...........that's why i'm asking]

I appreciate your negativity but are not dreams to be followed........yea i know i sound insane but i am sick of naysayers who try to deterr me from the military and that which i feel i am called to do.......

also, there are still some unanswered questions in my first post so if anyone knows the answers i am still waiting.

You wanna be a S/S and you're wondering about employability once you get out.....Welp, last I checked, the ability to shoot people isn't really in demand in corporate America.

This isn't a dig on the USMC, but if you're looking to maximize your employability once you get out and not intending to get a degree, look at the Air Force or the Navy.  If you intend to get a degree, then by all means, carry on with your plan.

Good luck and thanks for wanting to serve.

hehe [your first comments sarcasm is highly amusing][cuz it's so obvious]
i am not worried about employment my parents are of course they should be concerned
also, I am not an office type person I want to do things[meaning physically challenging] rather than research new drugs or program computers.

the main point of the question was is there a market for tactical marksmen in swat, le, or contractors............again i'm jsut exploring options and getting answers for the parents

eta: last i checked sniping was more than just shooting people [scouting, recon, 10%shooting]

Go do it. Get your mind right and stick it out. You won't regret it when you get done so worry about what you going to do when you get out, when you get out.

Do it for those of us who were in your position and were gullible enough to be steered away. But most importantly do it for yourself so you don't have to repeat my words 15 years from now.

Go all out and go balls to the wall.

If you go on and do this, be damn' sure you get EVERYTHING the recruiter promises you IN WRITING, and even then you might want to go to a shaman and have him cast the bones, concoct a potion or two and hoot a gutteral grunt or two at the Scout/Sniper gods. There are no guarantees in the military, and you could be the most hard-chargin' est rootin-tootin' est Marine on the planet and they could still stick you in front of a radio(TOC bitch) or have you driving some lardass officer around(General Purpose bitch).  I applaud you if you do decide to serve, but don't go into this with a romanticized view of the military; it ain't all shoot 'em up till Miller Time, with babes hanging off both arms(well, with ME it is...but your experience may vary ).  Seriously, though; Do your job, whatever it is,whether it's what you WANT to be doing or not, to the best of your ability, and you'll do fine.

just a humorous thought about a conversation I had with a retired army grunt "I hear you want to join the Marines?" me:"yea that's the plan."[cautiously awaiting the ol' "my branch of the military is better"]  he says: "well, don't join the marines" me: "ok" pause...........he says: "i'll tell ya a secret about them.............pause............under his breathe........."they're all gay".........

Theoretically all the services can give you an MOS (or equivalent acronym) guarantee, and depending on what it is and what the projections are for you can go in quick .  Rifleman in the Corps, how fast can you catch the bus?  or Intel Specialist in the Navy, last I heard the wait was almost 2 years.

Generally if you have the ASVAB scores and meet any special physical qualifications, you can ask for it.  It's up to you to pass the schools.  Getting an unqualified somebody to school to flunk them is counterproductive for a variety of reasons, they don't do it.  Flunking out a qualified candidate makes even less sense.

That's debatable.  A bachelor's in WHAT?

In many cases, technical training gained in the military beats out a bachelor's anyday of the week. Although if you have ambitions to enter a profession like medicine, law, engineering, etc, there's nothing wrong with going straight into college.

But you have no specific reason for going to college except "just because", or because it's expected of you, or there's general approval for you doing it..........BE CAREFUL.  You may be making a big mistake.

In the Marine Corps, you are sent to scout sniper school by YOUR UNIT.

It is nothing like getting guaranteed airborne/Ranger/SF in your Army enlistment contract. The Marine Corps doesn't do that.

If you are serious about going to scout sniper school, enlist in an infantry MOS.

Once you get to your unit, when they have a SS indoc, go for it. If you make it, you'll probably end up going to school sooner or later.

I was in a scout sniper platoon from 2003-2004. Never went to school because I joined the platoon halfway through our workup for OEF. When we got back they only sent the guys who were reenlisting.

Get in shape, you'll need it. A 285 Marine Corps PFT score was about average in my platoon. You'll also need a 100 GT score (part of the ASVAB) and expert rifle score at the minimum.

Scout sniper school is probably one of the hardest schools in the entire US military. Washout is really high and even the guys that pass don't always pass on their first try.

and my dad asked why...........me not wanting to give him my laundry list of reasons respectfully asked why not.........he supports me but wants to make sure i am not making a mistake[thank you very much, dad]

Another tough issue for me to face is the fact that it's all well and good for john doe's kid to go off and fight for his country but when its someone everyone knows they all ask "WHY".........an annoying response you would never get in any other career path..............rant?

But you can be high speed when you are young and in bad shape by the time you are 35 (ask me how I know)

It sounds like you know what you want to do and how to do it but are surrounded by people who take every opportunity to find fault with your plans.

Screw them.

You have a great plan in mind and if you stick with it you will be successful.

Never listen to advise from people who are not experts.  They will plant doubt in your mind that will keep you from achieving your goal.

Of course, I'm no expert.

Bah.  Civvies always get everything backwards..

We are not discouraging the lad, we are merely giving him a pre-boot camp indoctrination; free of charge.

Trust me, he will have had his feelings hurt, his motivations torn apart, his body ache, his parentage insulted, and have scrubbed other people's shit out of the crapper long before he ever steps foot in scout sniper school.

My advice:  You had better desire to be a Marine, first and foremost.  A scout/sniper a distant second..  It's a package deal; take all or none.

Exactly.
Become a good Marine, first.

THEN, if YOU demonstrate the right motivation and ability, AND the Corps decides that you are worthy...

...MAYBE you will be allowed to become a Sniper, Recon, Top Secret Super Commando, etc.

Being a Marine Rifleman and going to Iraq/A'Stan is almost guaranteed.
And that's not too shabby.

Get 0321 Recon Marine in your contract, they can get you a guaranteed seat in the Basic Recon Course, of course you have to pass Basic, SOI, and then be the PT god, and swim like a fish.

But you can be high speed when you are young and in bad shape by the time you are 35 (ask me how I know)

No, they cannot. They will guarantee you a shot at the indoc. If you fail the indoc, as most people do, your contract becomes an open contract and you will do somewhere dictated by the "needs of the Marine Corps". Whereever you go, you can rest assured that it will not be the infantry.

Join with and infantry contract, and work harder at everything you do than anyone you know. If you are the best out there, you might get your shot. If not, you won't.

believe me that is my feelings.................many years ago[before HS] when i first thought of enlisting the Marines was my first choice[cuz they're the mostest bad asses of them all]...........something about them has always attracted me............later i took a small bore shooting class from a former member of the army match team................after a few years of this i have become proficiently skilled at hitting what I aim at.............this has brought on the hopes of someday becoming another Carlos Hathcock[yea i know that's aiming pretty high...............but it gives me something to aim for i spose]

...............I once decided that what ever i chose as a career path i would be the best at it..........so even if s/s isn't in my future I will be the best at whatever the good lord[and the corps] sends my way.........
