Small plane makes emergency landing on peak of Masada
By Michal Greenberg and Zohar Blumenkrantz, Haaretz Correspondents

Initial reports indicate that a small plane made an emergency landing Friday morning on the summit of Masada, an ancient mountain fortress in the Judean Desert. It was not immediately clear whether the plane had crashed or why it was unable to continue flying.

The pilot and three passengers of the privately owned Cessna were lightly injured and taken to Soroka Medical Center in Be'er Sheva for treatment.

Thev passengers, who arrived from their hometown of Herzliya on Thursday, were planning to fly above the Judean Desert on Friday morning before heading back to Herzliya.

The Transportation Ministry's chief accidents investigator, Yitzhak Raz, was making his way to the scene.

(not this plane but great photo!)

Was there in '96 just before the intifada.  The top of Mosada is not flat, though a fairly long stretch of uneven rock...with rock, rock debris and ruins strewn across it's expanse.  The surrounding area isn't that much better, though the road to the site may have been an alternative...traffic isn't high, though there are few straight segments for a landing.

Aircraft undercarriage quite likely destroyed.  Gutsy move, with survivors!

I'll bet the tourists and staff working that day had quite an experience; another episode to add the the Mosada history as a refuge of last resort.

Given its actual history, that would be a first.
