He recently escaped from the PRK to Az.

He was doing some woodwork around his place when....whack.

His left index finger to the first joint, the bone is obliterated.

The good docs in Flag put it back together as best as possible.

Hope he feels better soon.

damn right they do.  Especially when you're try to take a pic with what was your off hand waiting for the wife to bring the car around to take you to the ER.

Not counting my guns as dangerous tools my table saw is in the top 5 dangerous tools I've.

Radial Arm Saw/ Router Table - Tied for first

Roto-Zip  - Third

router - fourth

table saw - fifth

my blasting cap yo-yo is quite dangerous as well.  not to mention my c-4 baseball collection...don't want to toss those around too much

What kind of person decides to actually take the time to take a picture of something like that right after it happens?

I think I'd be more worried about, y'know, stuff like calling 911, getting it bandaged up, etc. But that's just me.

Gat dang!

I worked at a motorcycle builder last summer where a guy chopped his hand right off. My friend had to pick it up and escort him to the front to call 911. Needless to say, he didn't return.

I've seen worse. When I did my rotation in the ER for my EMT course, there was a Mexican day-laborer who cut off his pinky and thumb, with a big gouge through the palm in between.

The nurse told me I was the only guy available, so I should glove up and help him take a piss.

Sorry, but I don't do that. I unbuttoned him and gave him the bottle. Covered him with a blanket when he was done. Not my problem.

At a plant where I worked I saw a guy touch some 440v stuff (switch box on a shear) with a screw driver.  The voltage went right thru him without a hitch until it exited his body thru the opposite hand.  Blew out some finger tips very similar to the pics here.  Except the were half cartorized (sp?) i.e., burnt closed.

I'm a relative beginner--what's a "shaper?"

Think of it as an overgrown router table on steroids...with an antisocial attitude thrown in for kicks.

Sorry, that sucks for him.  I chewed through my left ring finger from the very end through down to the first knuckle (the one closest to my hand), I kinda wish I had a camera phone to take a pic.  The only long term problems I have are other than the lack of movement in the tip, a moderate amount of chronic pain due to the tendon damage.  FWIW this was about 3 years ago and his fingers look exactly like mine did.

Buy a table that will allow you to easily replace the top with your own custom-made tops.

You will eventually want to make application-specific tops with holes and slots drilled for stops and such for shaping specific things.

Oh, and push sticks and featherboards are your friend.

Ah, thanks.  I'm getting ready to buy a router table shortly.  I was hoping it would be safer than clamping the wood and routing by hand.  I have a great deal of finish work to do on my cabin that involves the use of a router.

I sure do enjoy the various things you can do with one though.

I am terrified of that little bit spinning at 15,000 RPM.

Most currently available router tables have safety features and bit guards.  Think of it like reloading with a pistol powder you can double charge.  Concentrate on the business at hand, and feed in the right direction.

Actually not too bad for what the table saw can do to you. Especially the guys who keep the blade all the way up no matter the thickness they are cutting.

Shapers are no joke. Ripping with a radial arm saw can be dangerous as hell also.
