Every hobby as diverse as the shooting sports has a group that are the "nerds."

Which are the nerds of shooting?

Benchrest.

ETA: maybe Cowboy Action

ETA: perhaps Black Rifle Fanatics

ETA: naw, just them Fudds

If the shooting world were a high school:

the "Fudds" would be the jocks:  big, dumb, not good for much, but popular.

the "Clays" would be the yuppie, preppy, tennis and summers in the Hamptons rich kids.

the "Period Military" would be the theatre/thespian/school musical types.

the "Cowboys" would be like the farm kids.

and the "Benchresters" are definitely the nerds.

Interesting question...

Yeah, I can see the BR crowd as being percieved as nerdy.
If you think of scientists, experimenters, etc as nerds.
I can see that.

But a different group of folks that could be called nerds are
the "I like shiney things" crowd.  The guys that get excited
for months because version 6.0.2 of Windows Jammer is
coming out.  With that in mind, when I read the thread title,
I "knew" my answer was going to be the KTOG gang.  Years
ago I too had a Kel-Tec, and went to the Kel-Tec Owners Group
for tips on how to get it to work.  And I remember thinking to
myself at the time, "these guys like shiney things".

The John Kerry type hunters. As in Elmer Fudd. Funny hats, designer hunting attire, $20,000 shotgun they shoot once a year, see no use for "evil looking guns."

"What's a Fudd?"

An elmer is a hunter that comes out before hunting seasons, fires 2 or 3 rounds and deems himself and his zeroing..A1.

the 350 pound guys wearing tactical gear, mall ninja types, they always have the most expensive gear, and usually set up a sun shade and hog the range all day, mr. know it all types.

I've got this one for sure. It's small bore competitive shooters. They are the most anal of all shooters. Last year one shooter was given a "range allibi" because a spectator somewhere behind him was eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and he claimed the smell upset him to the point he complained and was given a re-fire!!!! What a bunch of wussies.

Those guys are the "Dorks" in my book.

I most resemble the dorks.

60% dork
20% fudd
20% period military

those voting for the benchresters I can understand.

HOWEVER,
the geeks that play dress-up and take on different personas complete with names, etc. are in a league by themselves.  (cowboy action shooters to be specific)

Having met some of them, I can safely say that not a bigger group of mega-dorks exists.

some probably do think so.

When they were "in character" you had to call them by their cowboy alias

they took offense otherwise...

needless to say, I don't go to the range when they're there.

No were jocks, we have all the ammo and evil black guns and go around thinking we can beat anybody, including the US government, the Chinese and the Mexicans all at the same time.

Anybody who plays dress up (this applies to wanna-be commandos, cowboy action shooters, benchresters, and the skeet crowd.)

A better question would be - who isn't the nerd of the shooting community.
I like shooting, but man, I am ashamed to be associated with most people I see at the range.
So many losers it blows my mind.

I think we are the Fonzies of the shooting community. The rebellious bad boys in the black leather jackets who the chicks dig and the jocks are afraid of.

Touche.
Actually, what they are thinking is "how can I get girls to come with me to the range?"

I think it might just be the rifle range I go to.
Lotsa fatasses with tricked out SKS, gang bangers, couch commandos, and fudds.
Never been muzzle swept or told "you don't need one of them" so many times in my life.

The pistol range I go to is far more upscale - mostly caters to serious users.

The true Nerds are the bolt action/obscure handgun milsurp collectors.

If you are familiar with all 117 variations of the Mosin-Nagant, you are a Gun Nerd.

If you can spot the outline of Carcani, Enfields, Mausers, Arisakas, MAS, and Steyr straight pulls through the pawn shop window while driving past, you are a Gun Nerd.

If you go to a gun show just so see the lastest shipments of 125-year-old weapons' technology and end up talking about barrel band variations of the Yugoslavian Mausers, you are a Gun Nerd.

Nerds are smart but to most people, terminally uncool.

I am guilty of all the above charges.

Well, when I saw the thread title, what immediately came to my mind was "Airsoft," but I guess they're a rung below all the others listed because they don't use actual firearms. Even cowboy shooters and benchrest shooters use real guns, regardless of how nerdy they may act.
