I tried some coast guard rations that were only like 10 years old, and they tasted like a combination of sugar cookies, crayons, and particle board.

Neat find. I don't think old candy and gum can hurt you, but maybe the vitamins?
I see it's made by the "Charms Company". They used to put those Charms candies in MRE's, and if the meal was even only a couple years old, they were all gummy and crappy. That sticky shit would get everywhere. Horrible candy. If you open it, please take a picture. |

One of the NCOs I know said that when they were in Iraq in 2004, the kids would come up to the HMMWVs wanting free food (while the vehicles were moving), so they'd peg the kids as hard as possible in the forehead with the Charms (either individual ones, or the whole pack for the insistant kids). The kids would still try to eat'em, then get pissed off and throw the rest back at the HMMWV. I tried to eat some, I felt like this guy:  Kharn |

Unsafe. We don't know what chemical reactions have taken place inside that can. It may look okay, but the vitamins in particular could be toxic. It is worth more sealed. There is no reason to risk you liver on chemicals that may have gone from 1940's useful to 2006 dangerous.

They are worth much more to collectors. Put them on the Survival Gear EE forum. You might be surprised how much people are willing to pay for them unopened.

I have eaten the gum from 60's C-rats, and even tried the chocolate bars and john wayne crackers...did not get hurt, but Im not brave enough to do the cheese or main meals...
Leave it sealed up.

As curious as I am to see what's in there and how it was packed. So if you open it, +1 on taking pictures!
I recommend not opening it. Save and see if there is any collector interest. I'd say NEVER eat such dated goods. I wouldn't eat MRE's older than 5yrs. |

My guess is that is a coating on the container to prevent rust, it was just applied unevenly. |

They opened up a World War 2 MRE tin on Mail Call and it was pretty much unedible/turned to dust. Don't open it. It's probably worth some money still sealed. I can already assure you that it is unedible (hell it could make you very sick to eat).

I've had 15 year-old pound cake that wasn't too bad. The 15 year-old crackers really sucked though. I doubt the candy would hurt you, but it still wouldn't be what most people would consider "edible."
