Officials Deport Illegal Immigrant Charged With Drunken Driving

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- An accused wrong-way driver caught speeding on a main street in Charlotte is on his way out of the country.

Police arrested Jose Aguilar on Sunday morning and charged him with drunken driving. Aguilar, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, is accused of being Charlotte's latest wrong-way driver.

Police arrested him driving outbound in the inbound lanes on Monroe Road Sunday morning. They said he was going up to 90 mph for nearly five miles while his blood-alcohol level was more than two times over the legal limit.

Officers were able to stop him near McAlpine Creek Park. Aguilar was immediately taken to jail and is now on his way back to his home country.

Authorities said Aguilar was arrested in Mecklenburg County on suspicion of DWI in 2004.

Rep. Sue Myrick, who's fighting for tougher immigration legislation, said that's unacceptable.

"There is no excuse for someone having more than one DWI and our bill said if you have one DWI, you're deported. One time -- no three strikes you're out," she said.

Part of the legislation she supports calls for severe penalties for those who re-enter the country after being deported.

"We have been so lenient in this country -- really turned a blind eye to what's going on -- and now it's poking us in the eye. We have a big problem," said Myrick.

Some drivers who use Monroe Road are upset about what happened and agree the laws need to be tougher.

"When folks come into this country and they're supposed to apply for different things -- licenses -- when they don't, it leads to things like this," said one Charlotte motorist.
