Governor Riley Signs Alabama
“Castle Doctrine” into Law

Fairfax, VA – Today, Governor Bob Riley of Alabama signed the National Rifle Association (NRA)-backed “Castle Doctrine” bill (SB 283) into law. Senator Larry Means and Representative Albert Hall sponsored the self-defense bill.

With overwhelming support, SB 283 passed the Alabama House with a vote of 82 to 9 and the Alabama State Senate with a vote of 30 to 2.

NRA’s chief lobbyist, Chris W. Cox, stated, “We thank Governor Riley for signing this vital legislation into law for the people of Alabama. Law-abiding citizens now have the choice to defend themselves and their families in the face of attack without fear of criminal prosecution and civil litigation.”

The “Castle Doctrine” bill removes the “duty to retreat” if an individual is attacked in his or her home, vehicle, place of business or any other place he or she has a legal right to be. This legislation also states that victims may use necessary force to defend themselves against the attacker.

Continued Cox, “I would like to thank the bill’s sponsors, Senator Means and Representative Hall, and the Alabama State Senators and State Representatives who supported this bill. As always, we also thank all the NRA members and lawful gun owners who contacted their representatives and urged them to support this vital self-defense measure.”

Kentucky has it in the works. It passed the house with only 4 votes againsts it. If the Senate brings it up it should go right on through.

House bill 833 would allow sbrs. There is little time for it to pass, but it is out there. Hats off to the NRA, and all who supported the castle doctrine.

Good deal. Virginia had it on the plate for 2006 vote but pulled it when the Dems started calling it a license to kill anyone you want. Its the same crap the left said about the CWP movement in the 90's. I think we need it at the federal level. Its something that was a given up untill the 1970's. Pretty soon we will need laws to protect our rights to eat beef its getting so screwed up.

He so thouroughly pissed off the Dems they automatically killed any bill he had any thing to do with. It confirmed and clarified the CA "Castle" law.)

... and provides civil liability protection. This is probably the more important part of the legislation in practical terms, as Alabama juries historically haven't indicted/convicted (nor our DAs typically prosecuted) those who shot justifiably in defense of life & limb.

Our local news station did a story about the new law the other day. While a large majority of Alabama citizens agree with it, apparently most of the inner city folks are against it. They showed many of them saying they were worried that people would use it as an excuse to kill someone they didn't like.

It's been said that the real reason they are worried is that law abiding armed citizens will shoot them when they break into homes or try to car jack someone. Too bad!
