I rode my bicycle from my house off of San Mateo and Lomas ( if your familiar with the area ) to the santa ana casino, my g/f had a soccer game and the fields are right next door.
I left my house at about 1 and arrived at about 2:30 from my rough estimate it was about 20 miles give or take about 2-5 miles.
It really kicked my ass  , I never realized how much drag the wind causes...

Anyone else get out there and ride this weekend?

First time this year?

Damn, I've raced three times (a TT and two Crits) already and ridden about 2800 miles since January 1st. There's another time trial on Saturday and on Sunday I'm doing the 30+ and Cat 3 race in downtown Norfolk.

You have a lot of catching up to do

Just kidding, it's good you got out and got your ass kicked. Make sure you do it again next weekend!

sounds good, do you recomend any way to train for a 100 mile ride, my goal is to do a straight 100 mile ride by the end of the summer.
and yes I have alot of catching up to do . =o) ..

RIDE!

I know it sounds simple but just get out there and ride. Start off with what you did this past weekend and slowly work you're way up in miles as your fitness level rises. Follow the LSD method: Long Slow Distance and just get base miles in your legs. If you're not doing the 100 miler for time then all you have to do is get some miles on your legs and work on endurance.

How much time do you have to train during the week and on the weekends? I can help you put together a plan or direct you to some online resources if you like.

Typically, by now, I should have all my base miles in already and should be concentrating on intervals but I'm behind the ball as well so don't get discouraged.

Good for you! I rode my MTB on Saturday for the first time in two months and I had a blast! However my MTB needs a lot of work (drive train, new shifting pods, new fork)

It was windy as hell here too on Sunday but I had a tail wind the whole way back and I got a nice start on my farmer tan so it was a pretty good day!

well forgive me but i'm not really up on all the technical stuff , but Ever since I got my bicycle last year I have fallen in love with riding.

I have weekends and probably a a hour or 2 on weekdays if I become completely dedicated.

Do you think its doable on my bike, even though its mostly a mountain bike, should I put street tires on it or could I get away with my knobby tires?

and any direction on websites to check out would be awsome.

I know people do the MS150 on mountain bikes so it's doable. I would definitely put slicks on if you'll be riding on the road. If you ride a mix then find a set of Ritchey SpeedMax.

If you can ride during the week do so. The more you can ride the better off you'll be. Taking 5 days off every week won't get you any where near your goal. I would do the bulk of your milage on Saturday then use Sunday as a recovery ride.

Since you have plenty of time until the end of the summer just ride like you normally would for the next two months (April & May) and look to start a training program in June. You should only need 8-10 weeks to get ready for a century.

I'll did up some links for you but next time you're at the grocery store grab a Bicyclist magazine. They usually have a bunch of helpful training tips in there and probably a link back to their website and archives.

DV8, just ride 25-30 miles at a moderate to quick pace 2-3 times a week with one recovery ride each week. Do this for 4-6 months and you should be ready to do a hundred miler.  Oh yeah, do put street tires on the bike, it'll be easier on you and much safer. Those knobbies have zero traction on damp pavement.

Ugh, I gotta get off my ass and get my Specialized down to the bike shop and get it tuned up.  I can do most of it, but I'm still afraid of playing with air sprung shocks/forks.  And I need a new pair of shoes.  And I need a new pair of shorts.  And I need a new helmet.  Dammit to hell this is gonna cost a lot of money.....

Here's a nice little chart that gives you a good idea about increasing your milage as you train: www.diablocyclists.com/RiderTips/EasyCenturyTrainingProgram.htm

I would definitely get a couple of the 60+ mile rides in before you set out to do 100.

Just took mine out the other day too. I just got mine last week and it rained 3 days after so Saturday was the first day I could ride....

Thats good to hear. I just took off the knobbies and put on some inverted mountain tread tires. They are pretty sweet and no buzz

I did the Courage Classic in the Colorado Rockies on a mountain bike (150 miles). I used the tires that are, for the most part, slick down the middle with knobs on the side. Worked great for road, but if I saw a road side trail or other fun spot I wasn't totally screwed off road.

First race of the year last Saturday at the VA Duathlon 5K run/32K bike/5K run in 1:43:03.  20.8 mph on the bike and a 21:31 first run/22:08 second.

When/where is the TT on Saturday?  Normally a run day for me, but it sounds like fun.  IS the Cat 3 race this weekend.  Once upon a time I raced Cat 3.

[Cartman] Screw you guys... I"m going home...[Cartman]

I was just told by the doc that my back injury will make bike riding a very stupid thing to do for the foreseeable future.   I might look into a recumbent though, as I understand they are very fast and put very little stress on the back.  Hopefully it will also help strengthen the muscles back there.

Anyway I just had to sell my Trek last weekend...

I think K2's are pretty decent bikes.  They seem to run from just a notch above Wal-mart crap to some pretty high end stuff.  If nothing else their graphics look awesome!

In reply to the mountain bike guy, if you are planning to ride mostly on the road I would probably trade up for a serious hybrid, such as a Trek 7700FX or a real road bike.  There is a new class of road bike out there with more upright easy riding geometry if you aren't fond of the flat out road bike riding style.  A Trek 1200C is a good example.  You will get much better on road performance with more sensible geometry, weight, and gearing, not to mention tires...

In a nutshell a road or hybrid bike will give you more miles covered for the energy you expend.

But in true ARFcomm fashion I would recommend you get both!  Keep your MTB and get a dedicated road rig too!  It sounds like you will be putting more than enough miles on your bike to justify the outlay of cash.  And yes, buy as much bike as you can afford.  You will enjoy it more and ride it more as a result.

Hampton Roads Classic/Conte's Classic

The TT is out in Smithfield and there is still some spots available. I start sometime between 8:45 and 9:05. On Sunday I race at 8:15 and 11:50 so if you plan on going to either one look me up!

Is the TT UCI rules or can I ride my tri-bike with the saddle nose forward of the bottom bracket?  I may come look you up Sunday - depends on the group ride.

Do you have a dedicated TT bike Marc?  Here is my current project - just need to put on the chain, tweak the shifting, and tape the bars.  Could be yours at FK this weekend.

That is SWEET!

Yes you can ride your tri-bike, nobody is going to check. Several Tri guys were out at the last TT...one of the FK guys for sure (can't remember his name).

I have a Giant TCR0 that I use as my TT bike. It's not a real TT bike but I'm not a real TT rider either When I get fast again I'll buy myself a fast bike. Until then my little Giant will have to do.
