Went to the range today to shoot a 10/22 I built over the weekend. I took my old .22 and put a Houge OM stock and a 16" Gun Works threaded barrel. I shot maybe 300 rounds without a problem. Then BANG! I don't know what happened. I had a huge burn mark on my hand and brass shards in my face.
It looked like the rim was mushroomed and was broken apart. I never wear eye protection, but will start now. What do you think could have casued this? It didn't look like there was any damage do the gun, but there were a few brass shards inbedded into the rubber houge stock not to mention my hand.

Maybe you should have someone else build your guns.

I bet you had a squib and fired another round right behind it. The barrel is strong and the 22 not strong enough to do anything but shoot everything out the back and expel the rounds.

Glad your OK. Had a the same thing happen last week. I used to wear my glasses MOST of the time, after my little mishap I will never be without them again on the range.

Yep, I had a squib with a colibri and bulged a stainless steel barrel out.

Did you take out the bolt? Was the striker stuck? My guess was it fired out of of battery.

i normaly didnt were glasses but it was a windy day so i decided to were them and had a piece of brass bounce off a post and get stuck under them and a a nice burn on my face

really dirty chamber + really dirty gun with stuck forward firing pin can do it too

You may very well have had a squib round. Remington rimfire ammo is bottom of the barrel in my book. I consistently get dud rounds when shooting Thunderbolt or the Peters brand. My friends report the same thing with that stuff. For cheap .22LR, I stick to CCI Blazer, Mini-mags, Winchester Wildcats or Federal bulk packs from Wal-Mart.

Dirty chamber causes the cartridge not to chamber. If the rim is struck just right by the bolt, kaBoom! How dirty is the gun and is there a lot of fouling or unburnt powder in the area of the chamber? Check your bolt face for smoothness and your striker for movement.

I'm thinking out of battery. I had this happen twice. Sometimes the round won't quite fit into the chamber, but the bolt will go far enough to allow the rifle to fire out of battery. It will fire, make a loud bang out the ejection port, and the case will be split open at the base.

Check your extractor. Is it missing? Both times it happened to me, the extractor was completely blown out of the gun.

This seems to be a problem occurring with target barrels which probably have tighter chambers than the stock barrel.

The fastest 10/22 I have ever seen shot was from Ratterrior of Oklahoma! He will some day get what happened to you! And I would guess a semi-auto was not meant to fire full -pull auto!

Bump fireing is stupid unless it is needed,while confronting a large force!

Glad you were not hurt,shooting eye wear is just as important as ear gear!

You can't replace the inner ear or the eye!

I doubt it fired out of battery. Shitty ammo on the other hand I do not doubt. I had a squib with my .22 pistol a few years back, really happy I didn't fire a subsequent round.

My Dad was shooting his 10/22 this past wkend, and noted that the Rem ammo (green pack of 550) sounded "off" or "weak" every 20th round or so. I know exactly what he means. I don't trust that Rem shit much, but I do make it a point to listen closely to every round fired (as with all weapons)-- but I still shoot the shit out of it!!!

+1, ended up with a little brass in my arm because the gun was filthy.

I've had the same thing happen after shooting a shitload and getting the gun really dirty. I didn't get any brass stuck in me but the bolt was partially back and the case blown out the side and most of the bottom. I just attributed it to the bolt not fully going into battery. I pried what was left of the case out of the chamber and I hosed it down with some lube to get some of the gunk out and kept on shooting.
