I am taking my wife out to the best resturaunt and want to make it special...I need some suggestions for a good wine for her. She likes red wine. I am an idiot when it comes to choosing wines.

Any good suggestions?

If you get something mid priced and are authoritative everyone will think you know what you are talking about, and if they dislike your selection they will pretend it is good.  I like cheap Kendall-Jackson stuff, but when in college wine isn’t a big part of the budget.

Choose a Lindeman's or Rosemount Shiraz and you'll be good to go.  Both are Aussie wines.  Great wines for great prices.

BTW, are you taking this wine with you are getting it at the restaurant???

You can't really go wrong with a nice Merlot, if they have one on the winelist. It seems to go well with pretty much everything.

Yes..I am trying to prepare for what to order on the wine list..most of the time the waitor will choose the $$$ stuff just to bump up my check.

I wanted her to enjoy a good wine while dining.

Are there any name brands to look for?

The two Austalian brands above are low priced but very good wines.  Ask if they have the Lindeman's or Rosemount wineries.  The Shiraz from both is VERY good.

N-G:  What restaraunt are you going to and is their wine list online?  It's hard to make a decision by guessing what may be served at a mystery restaraunt.

If it's a very nice place the bar manager or sommelier should have some great pairings that they would recommend to you in advance.

Yes...here it is. If you can choose from their list I would be grateful..the meal is already going to cost $120+..so I wanted the wine to good but not too expensive.

Check out the list and tell me what ya'll think? Thanks a mill guys.

In my opinion, really good chianti's are difficult to find at a restaraunt unless you are going to a plce that has really worked on that part of their wine list.  Interestingly, I have been drinking quite a few Spanish Riojas lately and have found them to be consistenly good.

This stuff is great (usually can be had for $20 a bottle from a distributor):

I like Red Zinfindel over Merlot or Cabernet. Ravenswood is another decent one, it's priced less than the Poizin above, around $9 a bottle and is served in many restuarants like Carrabaa's and Bone Fish Grill.

My girlfriend loves red Cabernet.

Smoking Loon, Yellow Tail, Sebastiani are some of her favorites at a reasonable price. Typically $11 to $18 / bottle for these brands.

can't really make a recommendation without knowing what you're ordering.  your waiter will guide you, and most are well-trained to go with the best wine choice, not the highest price.   just remember this:

--don't buy a bottle that costs more than the two entrees combined.
--when talking whith your waiter, use the term "value" instead of "price".
--if you're unsure, pay the extra $10 for a better bottle.  you're making it a special night for her, so what is $10 in the grand scheme of things?

--ABSOLUTELY IMPERATIVE!  do NOT act like you know what you're doing.  the server will know immediately.  be honest and tell him that you need him to help find something good.

here's what i say if i don't recognize anything on the list:

"we're probably both having the steak, but i'm not familiar with your labels.  steer me towards a good, punchy red that's not going to break the bank."

any good fine dining server will now know...

1.  that i'm going with a higher-end menu item, so we've got money to spend.
2.  i'm value-conscious, so he has to give good service to earn his money.
3.  i'm confident enough to ask for assistance.

chances are, he'll immediately take you to the mid-range price section, where the best buys are, and make 3 recommendations.  most good servers take pride in making the perfect recommendation, instead of price gouging you.

have a nice time.

unless you're having chicken with lemon pepper, which will taste like mud after one mouthful of merlot.

I can't say that I've ever had that experience myself.

As a red wine drinker, I tend to choose from the menu accordingly.

i'm the same way, actually.  i'm a carnivore, and therefore my proclivity for zin and meritage teeth-stainers works out nicely.

AA report...went well, I did ask for a "punchy red that won't break my wallet" and the waitor was very helpful. My wife loved the Merlot and the dinner. It was a great night.

I brought in a little stuffed animal for her, a bunny rabbit, and she went gaga.

Went walking on the beach...I pinned her against my Jeep and sucked face for about 5 minutes, then we went home. great night. Oh, yeah..Thanks ARDoc!

Depends on what you are going to have.  Steak and red meats are always good with a Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, or even a Shiraz.  You are in FL, so more than likely you can get Yellowtail.  But if you can find a Greg Norman Pinot Noir that would be a very good choice.

Chiantis are not my choice, though.  Now, if they have Earth, Zin, and Fire, get that if you are having any red meat.  It is a Zinfandel (not a White Zin) and is VERY tasty and complements food well.
