Protesting over a law to allow firing workers without cause, or something like that.
 I can't imagine a socialist paradise like France having labor issues...

Yup last week they were mad at new laws which might not guarantee them a job and they just 'didn't know what to do' (according to one interviewed). The socialist paradise will implode through lack of quality labor and complete laziness and dependence on government cheese. |

In the United States private workers (those who do not work for gooberment) are "at will" employees, meaning they can be fired for any reason that does not violate discrimination laws. Government employees are "for cause" employees, meaning you have to have a legitimate reason to fire them. (Budget cutbacks, reorganization of the agency, misconduct, violations of policy, etc are legitimate causes for dismissal...) In the private sector, if a person isn't working out as a part of a team, you can fire them. You cannot do the same in the public sector, at least not outright. In France, however, almost ALL PRIVATE EMPLOYEES ARE FOR CAUSE EMPLOYEES. Which makes it damn hard to operate a buisness. That is the cause of the riots. The French don't want to be subject to market forces. I am not sure exactly how the French labor laws are, but if you combine a for cause system with collective bargaining, it can be damn near impossible to ever fire anyone. |

This one is not going away. The French system is so protectionist for the workers that companies essentially cannot fire anyone. Therefore, they don't hire any new employees. For the younger set, it is simply becomming possible to get a job. Being the French, I suspect that their solution will involve mass killings, civil war, and eventual invasion by the Germans.

I don't think it is so much a matter of fear of the protestors as it is a matter of what happens if they DO bust some skulls and put down the riot. What then? Be assured that if there is any backlash, the politicos would offer them up as sacrifices. Knowing that their government couldn't stand up to a bunch of rioting foreign terrorists, should they expect that their government will back them up when they start cracking the heads of French citizens? Doubtful. |
