It's not, however, the "progressives" who want to give away control of our port security to the Arabs and the Chinese.  It's not the "progressives" who think that the government should be able to listen to our phone calls and search our houses, and never have to report to a court after the fact that they've done it. It's not the "progressives" who sold us a load of horseshit about Iraq, and then committed us to a total clusterfuck that's bankrupting our country and killing our soldiers in what has become the biggest terrorist training ground in the world.  So what if the shit hits the fan in Iran?  Or North Korea?  What if Musharref is overthrown in Pakistan by Islamic militants?  We're so far overcommitted in Iraq that there's not a damn thing we can do about any it.  While every senator gets his pork barrel project - his bridge over a lake that goes nowhere, his billion-dollar-a-pop fighter jet to combat an enemy that lives in caves - we're bickering about whether it's the hippies or Pat Robertson that hate America the most.

You and I may disagree about a few things here and there, but until we have publicly financed elections and uniform election laws from county to county and state to state, money will continue to be the overwhelming factor in determining who is in power. And as long as candidates rely on corporate, union and organizational money, you and I won't be living in a democracy.  A state rep seat just became available here for the first time in my area, and one of my friends seriously thought about running.  He's worked in the state house for 10 years and knows what he's doing, but he figured he'd need at least $30k to run a campaign - for a STATE REP SEAT representing just my city in the state house.  The guy with the most money is running uncontested.

So who's your enemy?  Some jackass with a Che Guevara t-shirt who lives in his mom's basement, or the guy who gave the orders for the NSA to read your email and search your house while you're at work?  Who's a bigger threat to your way of life?

Notice how both parties are willing to do whatever to remain in office? We had 4 Republicans on that Senate committee side with the Democrats on the immigration bill....

Does either party have any interest (not professed, but backed up by legislation) in fundamentally changing (the fundamentally broken):

electoral system?
tax code?
social security system?

Your buddy was right. That kid in the Che shirt is vocal, but he doesn't have any understanding or power in the system. Our elected reps do, and use it to great effect.
