Got a 700LTR and need rings and bases.

Wanted to get the Badger Ordnance base and rings, but the scope I have is a Vari X II 3-9x40 and it has a 1" tube, not the 30mm tube.

The Badger Ordnance Rings are 30mm rings. I know that they make inserts for them so that the rings can be adapted to 1", but I don't like the idea of spending an additional $30 for the inserts and then also having more parts that make up mounting system.

Was thinking about the Leupold Mark IV bases and rings - they are about the same cost as Badger's.

Anyone have a 1" tube on their PSS ? If so - what works for you ?

I'm using the Badger Ordnance rings and base to hold up a Springfield 4-14x56 3rd Gen Gov't scope. This is on a 26" PSS. On a good day, this setup will put at least 3, sometimes 4 rounds of Fed Gold Medal Match thru the same hole. There's usually one flyer, but I think that it's me geting a little excited about the good grouping. If you need any info, please e-mail and I'll go into more detail.

Why would you waste that kind of money on that kind of set up? Leupold STD'd will be more than sufficient. But, if you insist on spending money; get ahold of Stokes he has a real reasonable set of Leupold MK 4 style set up that will save you money.

If you take your rifle from the safe to the range and back, then standard Leupold rings will probably be fine.... That said:

Badger Ordnance makes excellent products. Also, the Badger (or US Optics, or DD Ross) bases offer a lot more in mounting flexibility. Leupold Mk4 rings are nice, but I've seen some that took hours of lapping to get the burrs out.

I've got Redfield 2 piece ring and base on a Leupold 6.5 x 20 44mm with the target turret with EFR.

I am using a 1 piece steel Redfield mount, Redfield medium heigth rings, and a 6.5 x 20 Luepold (40mm) on a V.S. clearance at barrel is good. I just set this up but I think it will be good as I have used Redfield mounts and rings for many years without problem.

I pretty much have the same set-up as Havoc, but I have an M3 instead of an M1 scope and the factory stock, would LOVE to get a McMillan A3 stock though....

My LTR sports Leupold base and QRW rings. I thought I wanted the flexibility, but it turns out to not be as important as I thought. If I had to do it over, I would probably go with Leupold Mk IV base and rings instead.

But in your case, I agree with some of the other posters. It seems a waste to put over $100 into base/rings, and then use a $200 scope. Don't get me wrong, the scope is okay (I have one myself), it just doesn't warrant Badger or Mk IV hardware. If I were you, I would stick with standard Leupold mounts, and upgrade to better mounts when and if you upgrade to a better scope. My $.02

To each his own on scope choice but I like the Burris Signature rings. Synthetic inserts - no lapping needed. You can get Pos-align offset insert sets to adjust the mechanical zero in lieu of an adjustable base.

I have a PSS DM with a Leupold one piece "long range" base and Leupold rings with a Springfield 6x20x56 3rd gen. scope. My set up works very very good!

Anyone actually have experience with the 1" Badger Ordnance inserts - the ones that fit into the 30mm rings to reduct them to fit a 1" scope tube ?

My LTR is fitted with Precision Reticles/Leupold MkIV M1-16 with click-adjusted turrets and USMC mil-dots sitting in Leupold MkIV rings and bases. You can shoot only as good as you can see.

I use the varix3 4.5-14x tactical w/ milldot and badger ordnance rings and bases with the special tube inserts. I haven't had any problems with the inserts and the whole set up is rock solid.

Both the Badger base and Badger rings are better than their Leupold counterparts, and cost just a bit more. In case it matters, the BO base is Picatinny-spec, so it has correctly spaced slots along its entire length. The MKIV bases have only two slots in front and two slots in back, and who knows how they're spaced? And, even more important, the BO base has a recoil lug on it.

If you aren't going to get BO 30mm rings, I would still advice getting their base, which will accept any Weaver-style rings, such as Leupold QRWs. Note that they also OEM this base to Nightforce.

What kind of rings would you recommend. I'm set on the Badger Ordnance base, but the thing that is making me hesitate is having to use spacers to make the 30mm rings fit my 1" scope tube. The scope, BTW, is not cheap. It's only a Vari X II 3-9X40 but it comes with matte finish, tactical knobs, mil-dot reticle - cost me $400 It's a Leupold, so quality is there whether its a VariX II or III.

Are there any other rings that are 1" besides the QRW that will fit and be of "excellent" quality? Everyone is writing mediocre reviews of the Mark IV's by Leupold so it sounds like I don't want those either.

I have a PSS .308 that I have Smith Enterprises billet mount and rings with a Leupold MK IV, mildot IR scope. No complaints at all. I got the mount and rings through Brownell's.

USO sn-4 and USO rings. Rifle has been glass bedded and barrel cut to 22" and recrowned. Shoots very well.

For a 1" scope, I would either choose the Leupold QRWs, ARMS, or GG&G. All will work on the BO base.

I shoot an M700VS with a Nikon 6.5x20 mounted in Leupold STD bases and rings.

Spend money on glass and you can't go wrong. The Leupold bases are NOT gonna fall off.

BTW- I have found that if you gotta go to a lot of trouble to make something work it's probably not a good idea in the first place.

Kahles ZF95 mildot with Entreprise Arms proprietary "Tactical II" rings and base. Avoid those mounts like the plague. Complete garbage. Wish I would have spent the $$$ on Badger Ordnance mounts.

I have a custom 700 in a McMillan Adj. Prone stock with a 28" Rock barrel. With Nightforce Tapered Bases and Leupold MkIV rings I still have about 19" of elevation available when zeroed at 100 yds. Standard Leupold, Burris, Redfield, etc, are fine if you are going to use it as a range gun and not take the rig apart. After sinking the bucks into this rifle I wanted to be able to take the scope and rings off in order to put open sights on a front sight block and the rear base. That is where the extra bucks for Leupold MkIV style rings and quality steel bases pays off. By the way I have friends with Enterprise and Badger rings and they seem happy with them also.

I have a Leupold 4.5x14 mil-dot in a set of Leupy QD rings and mounts. It has a 1 inch tube. Rig will shoot about 3/8 with Fed 308m. Shot a 10 round group @100 yards and removed the scope between each shot. Group was .78 inch. Think I paid about 60 bucks for the set of rings and mounts. Best money I've spent

My setup: PSS DM 300WM with Badger rings and base, 3.5-15x 50 NXS Nightforce. It's sweet. Can't imagine ANYTHING Badger makes (one inch inserts included) not being built like a tank. On another note, I have MWG rings on a .338 I'm playing with. They seem to be almost Badger quality for alot less $$$.

I have 2 piece weaver mounts and rings surrounding a Springfield 4-14X56 3rd generation scope. I like it, works well. But it is heavy.

Leupold MK4 ring and bases. The bases were JB Welded to the receiver. The scope rings were lapped also. HTH

Badger rings need no lapping. They're machined as a pair, and serial numbered as a pair.

Don't buy the more expensive "Nightforce" mount/rings, as it's just repackaged Badger stuff.

I'm 90% sure that the DM models of the PSS have been discontinued. I heard that the short action .308 DM's sometimes had feeding problems but not the long action calibers.

Barrel length should be dictated by what kind of shooting you do & what caliber you use.
A .308 or .223 LTR is a handy little rifle capable of awesome groups out to 300yrds easy.
Maybe even 500yrds in .308.
If your considering longer ranges then a 26" barrel .308 is in order and any magnum should really have a 24"-26" barrel minimum or your just wasting powder.

A .300WinMag has been around for at least 30yrs & is a "traditional" belted magnum cartridge modeled after the "mother" of all belted magnums , the .375 H&H. The .300WinMag is a proven & popular round but a noticeable jump in recoil from the .308.

A .300 RemUltraMag is a new line of modern magnum rifle cartridges that uses a beltless case. A .300RemUltra is going to be faster & have more energy down range than the .300WinMag.
This is largely due to the greater powder capacity of the case. Another feature of the Remington cartridge is that is headspaces on the shoulder of the case as opposed to the Belt on the Winchester.
Theoretically better accuracy should be obtained with a case that headspaces on the neck as opposed to the belt.

A .300 Dakota & .300 Pegasus are similar predecessors to the Remington Ultra.

If you want serious down range energy (with an increase in recoil too :) the .338 Lapua or .338 RemUltra will deliver!

I know a good dealer in Texas that specializes in Remington PSS rifles & Savage Tactical rifles.

M700 VSSF .308 with Leupold one piece base with their medium rings with a Nikon Monarch 4x12x44 scope. May put the Nikon on a 10/22 target gun I'm working on and then a Leupold 4x14 or so on the 700.
All I do with the gun is shoot groups off a bench and every now and again a deer hunt, the Leupold bases etc work fine.

I own a 700P in .300 RUM, another in .308, and an LTR in .308.

I would highly recommend the .300 RUM, especially if you are a handloader. I originally wanted the .300 Win Mag, but did not like the belt (I've had nothing but problems trying to reload for my 7mm Mag). Once I saw the .300 RUM, so big and so [b]beltless[/b], I knew my search for a 30 caliber magnum was over.

As for the LTR, it is a great gun. It is lighter and looks way cool! However, I can't shoot it as well as it's longer-barrelled brother, and it has significantly more recoil. I can shoot my 700P all day long, but my shoulder knows it's been shooting the LTR after 20 rounds.

Short answer: if I had to make the shot, I would choose my 700P. But if I had to hike over a mountain first, I'd take the LTR... :D

I used to have a pic of my 3 bad boys, but after photopoint and then zing went away, I haven't bothered putting it up anywhere.

The VariX II scopes are good units, but they may not be a great choice for a sniper type setup. This is because they don't have click adjustable dials. If you zero for one range and leave things alone you will be ok, but adjustments for other ranges will be iffy with the friction type dials. I would not spend a great deal on mounts for this particular 1" scope. I have used both Leupold STD mounts/rings and Mark4 rings on my PSS rifles. I have either used a VariXIII 4.5-14x 1" scope or Mark4 10X 30mm tube. Both have worked out well. Watch-Six

I was thinking the same thing about the 300RUM, until I looked at the cost of the ammo, about $2.00 per round! ouch. I'm not a reloader, and won't be using it as a plinker, but $2.00 a round still will make practicing painful. Even .50cal is cheaper than that!

Going to have to do some more thinking on this, but the idea of a flatter tragectory is really appealing!
