Two Iraqi documents dated in March 2003 — on the eve of the U.S.-led invasion — and addressed to the secretary of Saddam Hussein, describe details of a U.S. plan for war. According to the documents, the plan was disclosed to the Iraqis by the Russian ambassador.

So that's how the Iraqi army routed our forces...Maybe we can bribe the reds to give their plans to the Iranians next?

It is more of a concern that the Russians were able to get the plans to begin with if this article is true.

You can tell alot from satelite photos. Based on where troops are massed one can make a pretty good educated guess as to what their intentions might be. Still, there is probably more to how they knew than simply that.

You smacked that one right out of the park JoeTexas!!! The U.S. is like the big, drunk, gullible guy in the bar buying all the whores drinks. The whores will stick around as long as the drinks keep flowing. When the drink stop, all of a sudden you're an asshole!

This also supports the fact that France and Russia scuttled the UN blessing on the invasion for reasons relating to the Oil For Food scandal.

It indicates they had a source at CENTCOM, since it included intentions as well as mere weapons counts that could be had from overhead imaging.

Dunno if some diplomat decided to brief the rooskies on the plan or if they simply had a spy in CENTCOM. Probably the latter.

I always thought that keeping secrets in this day and age of 24 hour cable and a -if-they're-not-traitors-what-more-could-they-do-to-be-traitors? Media is virtually impossible, especially with troop movements...

Just like Somalian boys with cell phones alerting their bosses that birds were enroute, I don't see how any modern and massive force can be brought to bear without a modern nation knowing they're coming... everything from knowing the approximate flying time from MO to Iran for a B-2 and then simply posting someone within earshot of the runways.... to using open source sat photos of the Gulf region (or Russian spy sats).

If we ever do invade Iran it'll have to be something fast and furious or they'll not only see them coming but be ready. Worse, chances are always high some media type, congressional staffer, or other dim bulb will blab the whole thing to the press 24 hours ahead of time.

I would like to think that, and I would like to think we told the Russians to leak it.

I don't trust the Russian Government enough to think they were cooperative with us in this however.  

Old habits die hard, and despite the wall coming down, the Russians still  display a Dark Ages mindset when it comes to promoting their interests internally and externally.

well, this is old news now but apparently the info was dead-on.

the problem (for the iraqis) is that some of the info was time-sensitive and quickly became outdated. then there was the fact that saddam was sucking divine guidance out of the ass of mohammed while big mo was sucking allah's pole. in addition, our strategy was fluid and changed with the conditions of the battlefield.

the bad news is the russian intel was very accurate over the basic make-up and broad strategy of the campaign. the initial thought was that there was a mole in centcom. now the .mil is quickly backtracking and saying they thought the intel was intercepted electronically.

i think the former and the latter is a smokescreen. somebody sold us and out and it's only because of the entrenched torpidity of the iraqi army and the utter conceited stupidity of saddam we didn't lose a lot more guys.

The first document (CMPC-2003-001950) is a handwritten account of a meeting with the Russian ambassador that details his description of the composition, size, location and type of U.S. military forces arrayed in the Gulf and Jordan. The document includes the exact numbers of tanks, armored vehicles, different types of aircraft, missiles, helicopters, aircraft carriers, and other forces, and also includes their exact locations. The ambassador also described the positions of two Special Forces units. Document dated March 25, 2003 The second document (CMPC-2004-001117) is a typed account, signed by Deputy Foreign Minister Hammam Abdel Khaleq, that states that the Russian ambassador has told the Iraqis that the United States was planning to deploy its force into Iraq from Basra in the South and up the Euphrates, and would avoid entering major cities on the way to Baghdad, which is, in fact what happened. The documents also state "Americans are also planning on taking control of the oil fields in Kirkuk." The information was obtained by the Russians from "sources at U.S. Central Command in Doha, Qatar," according to the document.

This is really disconcerting news.
