After the Death of Chef Southpark episode last night, I channels surfed for a few minutes until I settled on the TVLand Awards Show.  The final award was given to the cast and producers of Cheers.  Each actor got up, accepted the award and spoke a few short words.

John Ratzenberger, a.k.a. Cliff the mailman, thanked the producers and writers but went on to thank the troops overseas, "whose daily sacrifices make this nation great and safe for all of to do what we do." (not the exact quote...but close)

There was some applause in the audience, but when the camera panned, those where weren't clapping, began to clap on film.  Very Clintonesque.

I applaud you John.  You are a great american.

John also has a show on the Travel Channel where he goes around looking at the various manufacturing plants in the US called "Made in America" and he looks at the stuff Americans produce.

A good show.

He seems to be a very sensible fellow.

From what I've seen, he seems to be an OK guy.
Not the typical Hollywierdo.

He's also smarter than the average actor, he holds two or three patents.

He invented crinkled shipping paper or at least the device that makes it.

He's also got his own Star Wars action figure, but unfortunately, so does John Kerry.

I'm such a nerd. Ratzenberger played Major Derlin for about ten seconds in The Empire Strikes Back. He was one of the guys that told Han and Leia that Luke probably wouldn't survive in the cold or something like that. Cliffie was in England at the time, he had no idea what Star Wars was when he was cast in Empire, it hadn't caught on there yet.
