I scored a Kodak Easyshare DX7590 last October for a little less than $300. They're out of production now in favor of a new model, so prices may have gone down.
Some good stuff I like about it
SLR-like format
10x optical zoom (I think 2x digital on top of that)
5 Megapixel
SD card
LiIon battery (lasts long enough to take about 250-300 pictures)
Lots of preset modes that work generally pretty well
FULL manual mode, one setting that saves custom settings
Timer
Macro
Burst
Video
The only things I don't dig about it:
Takes a while to 'startup' when the memory card has more pictures on it. (Workaround: use several smaller cards and swap them out. Minor inconvenience)
Video is in MOV format (download and use the Quicktime Alternative if you don't want to use Quicktime)
Other bonuses
Extra batteries are cheap. SD memory is coming way down in price. Lenses, adapters and filters are available.
I dig it.
