Origin of the phrase "SHTF"?

[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Origin of the phrase "SHTF"?

Anyone know, one site I googled said that it originated in America in the 1930's, but was it from a movie, book, media of some sort? From the same guy that brought us BOHICA and FUBAR (whoever that is). Anyone know?

There was an old joke, a lot of details, a long drawn out one, that had that as a punchline. I remember hearing it back in the 60's, and it wasn't new then. I won't repeat it here, but it was a story, or joke the moral of which was something to the effect that just when you think things can't get any worse... then the SHTF. That phrase has stuck in the collective memory long after the joke has died away.

i think even if nobody has ever heard the expression or knows the context, just those words create a sufficient mental image
