George Washington
Thomas Jefferson Abraham Lincoln Teddy Roosevelt Poll coming. For me, it's either Washington or Jefferson and I'm leaning towards George Washington because he was the point man militarily and politically for the birth of this nation we call The United States of America. |
Washington because he would put the country back to the way it should be.
I however would like a write in for Reagan. |
Yeah, Reagan would be good.
I voted for Teddy. Any of them would be better than what we have now though I am not sure Lincoln wouldn't go for gun control! |
Teddy. He believed in the GREATNESS of america around the world, and wasn't afraid to do what was necessary for us to be the best
Name three great accomplishments that each did during their administrations. |
Bill Clinton (best pres.)
Malcom X is who should be running things now |
Washington: 1. Was the first. There was no template, no history, nothing to base his administration on. 2. He turned down a kingship. It was offered to him and he declined. That, my friends, is a true American hero. 3. He kept the young United States neutral during the war between the British and the French, knowing that siding with either country would spell doom for America. |
GW: His greatest accomplishments were prior to presidency. As President, he declined kingship even though it was offered. He reviled the inevitible bifurcation of political fighting, but did nothing (rightly) to stop it. TJ: Went after the Barbary pirates balls to the wall. The Europeans chose to appease the pirates (some things never change). Mandated the Lewis & Clark expedition. Bought 1/3 of today's CONUS from Napoleon. Lincoln: Stopped slavery from expanding beyond the south into the territories (which later became states). Quelled a rebellion over that issue. Had an excellent relationship/friendship with his upper-level staff. TR: A man of phenomenal physical courage. Helped break the power of the super-wealthy over the political system through the anti-trust actions. Created Panama from Columbia in order to build the Panama Canal. A real young ex-president, he didn't use his position to bad-mouth and undermine his country and replacements, unlike certain a-hole ex-presidents I could mention, |
I would have to vote for Ronald Rex, but he's not on the poll.
Teddy would be second choice. |
Interesting how Washington gets so little respect. Jefferson, too(although I see he is moving up).
Like I said, most of Washington's greatest accomplishments were prior to his becoming president. Quite a man who can say that. |
You're right. Think about that for a minute. |
Been a fan of TR my whole life.Do not agree with some of his politics, but respect his convictions and moral fiber.BULLY!
Went past GW's birthplace yesterday. Right by that of the world's GREATEST general. |
Washington was a great man and it's a hard choice between him and Teddy. I truely admire the spirit behind Teddy and his vision of America as a great nation that could do great things. I don't care for his take on government as an arbitrator in capitol vs. labor with the exception of the anti trust act. His views on conservation are why we still have some of the beautiful western parks we have today. I think he would be a good leader in even modern America. Washington was the man for his time. Some people by happenstance are put in the right place at the right time, and he is a perfect example. He was just what was needed as this nation formed. Jefferson is just someone I don't know a huge amount about. I've read a little about him but I couldn't form a conclusion based on that. Teddy edges the top for me. Reagan being next in line due in large part to his ability to create a grand vision of the nation and move smartly to see it happen. He made you smile and say "Damn, that's my President" and be proud of it. The 86 ban being his biggest failing in my eyes. I still understand why he did it. |
I voted for Washington.
Jefferson was good, but his philosophy on government differed greatly from his rule. Lincoln is credited with freeing the slaves, but the reality IMHO is that Lincoln wasn't anything spectacular. He was president during the civil war so he gets the credit for the victory that the Union Army achieved and he also didn't do anything to free the slaves until the war was nearly over and the Confederacy was on the brink of collapse. What I find surprising is that so many of you chose Teddy Roosevelt. I don't think that very many of you know very much about Teddy Roosevelt. I agree that he was great because he turned America into a world power, but he was also a Socialist. Not the kinc of closet socialists that we have today. Not like Bush or Clinton who give handouts and expand government while claiming to be capitalists. Roosevelt was an open, unashamed Socialist. Here is the text of a speech delivered by TR in Kansas in 1910:
I've been called a communist by many of you for suggesting far less! |
Many would say that he started that rebellion. His actions ended states' rights and started the death of the republic. |
I voted TR. But I wish RR was one of the choices.......
"It has been said that politics is the second oldest profession. I have learned that it bears a striking resemblance to the first." - Ronald Reagan Here's my strategy on the Cold War: "We win, they lose." - Ronald Reagan The most terrifying words in the English Language are: "I'm from the government and I'm here to help." - Ronald Reagan "The trouble with our liberal friends is not that they're ignorant: It's just that they know so much that isn't so." - Ronald Reagan "Of the four wars in my lifetime none came about because the U.S. was too strong." - Ronald Reagan "I have wondered at times about what the Ten Commandment's would have looked like if Moses had run them through the U.S. Congress." - Ronald Reagan "The taxpayer: That's someone who works for the federal government but doesn't have to take the civil service examination." - Ronald Reagan "Government is like a baby: An alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other." - Ronald Reagan "If we ever forget that we're one Nation under God, then we will be a Nation gone under." - Ronald Reagan "The nearest thing to eternal life we will ever see on this earth is a government program." - Ronald Reagan "I've laid down the law, though, to everyone from now on about anything that happens: no matter what time it is, wake me, even if it's in the middle of a Cabinet meeting." - Ronald Reagan "Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it and if it stops moving, subsidize it." - Ronald Reagan "Politics is not a bad profession. If you succeed there are many rewards, if you disgrace yourself you can always write a book." (Amen!) - Ronald Reagan "No arsenal, or no weapon in the arsenals of the world, is so formidable as the will and moral courage of free men and women." - Ronald Reagan: Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference. The Marines don't have that problem." - President Ronald Reagan |

jefferson. right now we need a president who actually believes in small government, and jefferson is the man for the job. washington comes in 2nd
Color me not surprised at all to see TR in the lead at this point.
They were all great men... But TR is what the US and the world needs right now. |
Washington was a great man, but it's hard to judge his personal presidential abilities as he was surrounded by the greatest Americans who ever lived, all working together as one despite their political differences.
Jefferson was an incredibly brilliant philosopher but was very divisive and not as brilliant a statesman. Lincoln had the backbone to do what he believed had to be done, despite the consequences, but he was lacking in wisdom to some extent. I would pick Teddy Roosevelt. Like Washington, he was a man who didn't flinch from putting himself in harm's way---he was a man's man, a man of action. Like Jefferson, he was a far-sighted visionary who could look into the future of America. Like Lincoln, he didn't flinch from the hard task despite the consequences. He fused all of their best traits into an incredible personality that was akin to Ronald Reagan's. The only thing keeping TR from being universally acknowledged as the greatest president ever was the lack of a major crisis such as WWII or the Civil War for him to have handled. |
No, he was not, despite your cherry-picking use of his words. |
I geave you the whole speech Chachi. He believed strongly in the regulation of the free market, government assistence of those who could not achieve what others had in the free market, higher taxation of the rich and in some ways the redistribution of wealth. As I've said, people on this board (you included) have called me a communist for suggesting far less. |

I've agreed with any political figure 100% exactly 0 times in my life. The only way I would is if I were the political figure. I said there are aspects of his politics I don't care for. However he stood more for giving the next generation a chance at an equal oppertunity, not simply handing it out to them to give them an equal outcome. In that regaurd he is NOTHING like John Kerry, who's aims are simply to grow the class of government dependants who must then supply that government with votes to retain thier income. Looking at TR's background it is not hard to suppose his stance on social issues and the government. He did help bring America to the head of the line though and that makes him a good leader in my eyes. |
What some idiots have called you on this board has no relationship whatsoever to whether TR was a socialist. He was not, Joannie. |
I voted TR; I don't consider TR's rhetoric, which sounds socialist to us now, to be reflective of what he would have done today.
TR was dealing with a different time with different issues - consider the circumstances behind the Meat Inspection Act, which led to the Pure Food and Drug Act. Today we're shocked if something is a little stale or off from the supermarket. 100 years ago... Political litmus tests like abortion didn't exist at the time, and nobody questioned the meaning of the Second Amendment. My first Poli Sci professor argued for 'vote for the man' (or his character) 'rather than the issues, because the issues will change.' I agree. TR was resolute, intelligent, broad-minded, energetic and decisive. He would be the man to deal with the GWOT were he alive today. In a poll last year the Economist magazine also rated TR as our finest. The sheer breadth and depth of his life is extraordinary. "Harvard graduate, historian, New York state assemblyman; rancher, Civil Service Commissioner, New York City Police Commissioner, Assistant Secretary of the Navy; Commanding officer of the "Rough Riders;" war hero; Governor of New York; Vice President, and then President of the United States at age 42." Oh, also the first American Nobel prize winner, I think. I highly recommend Edmund Morris' book 'The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt' for an examination of the first third of the life of one of our greatest Americans. |
I believe that Roosevelt was a great president. He was a heroic warrior, he turned the US into an international power, he helped to crush the monopolies which threatened our economic future, he was an avid outdoorsman, he was an enormous advocate of civilan gun ownership and encouraged civilian marksmanship and he said what he meant and meant what he said. I have nothing but the highest respect for him and he is definately one of the greatest president this nation has seen or ever will see again. Washington created this nation though IMHO. He was also a heroic warrior, devoted to liberty, and beleived with his whole heart that the people were the final authority. He saw this country through the darkest times of it's formation and led us to stability after the articles of confederation failed. We will never see another man with the character, devotion or conviction of George Washington. |

Jefferson was in Washington's cabinet and advised against spirit taxes along with Adams, but GW is the father of the ATF&IRS contrary to the constitution. Washington was a good general but a poor president. The others listed were flaming socialists. |
You're utterly ridiculous. |
Another write-in for Ronnie.
" I have just passed legislation outlawing the country of Iran. Bombing will commence in 5 minutes." |
It doesnot matter , The Comunists in the MSM are running things
They ARE? Gosh, I wonder why John Kerry isn't President then? |
That's the problem. You believe in that, that's a betrayal of what the Founders wanted. No entangling foreign affairs. |
GW. He fought the war for freedom and best understands the original intent of the Constitution.
I voted Teddy, but if I could pick one person it would be Gen. George S. Patton Jr
Then why did he assemble an army and put down the anti-plunder movement falsely called the whisky rebellion. |
Teddy would be a good choice, but if he was pres again prepare to spend a trillion dollars annually on defense. Cause it would be open season worldwide. That dude didn't fuck around!!
