I just watched the Lord of War.  The 7.62x39s journey from the factory to the magazine then being fired in the opening sequence has to be one of the most creative openings that I have seen in a long time.

The best however has to be the opening of the original Star Wars.  That was amazing when I was a kid and even now.

I liked the Lord of War opening too, even though I doubt ammo's packaged that way.  Still, it was a great use of the medium, and original.

I'm still thinking of great openings.

I generally like the James Bond formula of an opening scene and then the credits.  My favorite is The Living Daylights, with the training mission on Gibraltar.  Mainly because I've never seen Gibraltar in movies aside from The Living Daylights and Das Boot.

+1 I couldn't care less about the rest of the movie, the opening sequence is what made the movie worth watching, in my opinion.
The rest of the movie was good, too.

LOW's bullet cam was fun,

But Once Upon A Time In The West is the best, without a doubt.

"Did ya bring a horse for me?"
"Looks like we're shy one horse."
"No, ya brought two too many."

When I was growing up, I loved the opening to the movie 'Firebirds'  I was awesome to see the Apaches coming up and filing the screen like that.  For a long time, right up until my senior year in HS, I wanted to be an Apache pilot cause of that movie.

Important note here.  The best actor in that movie was the Apache

Apocalypse Now, although it was short.

The oft-mentioned Lord of War.

Kill Bill V. 1

Pulp Fiction

The opening to Thirteen Days was, although stock footage, dramatic and set the tone for the entire movie.

I forget, what was the opening to Boondock Saints like?

Where they are in Church and the Priest is talking about Kitty Genovese and what happened to her, with the kickass choir music going on in the background as they go up to the front of the church, kneel and pray and then walk out.

That just screams badass.

Being ancient, the first Star WArs movie ws pretty spectacular for it's time.  I also like the opening scene of the first Star Trek movie.  The Klingons battling V-ger.  Outstanding music for that scene.  I even have a 33 LP soundtrack of that movie just because of that score.  Unfortunately, I should have left then and there.

I haven't seen too many movies at the theater the last several years.   Many of them just don't appeal to me anymore.

I remember seeing a film in my college film courses where God commits suicide hari-kari style in the opening scene. Needless to say, the film was not a comedy.

I'll never forget the feeling of dispair and hopelessness from that scene.

Romancing the Stone. My wife & I thought we were at the wrong movie during the opening sequence.

What's it gonna be, Angelina?

-It was Grogan - the filthiest, dirtiest, dumbest
-excuse for a man west of the Missouri River.

You can die two ways, angel.
Quick, like the tongue of a snake,
or slower than the molasses in January.

- But it was October...

I'll kill ya, damn it, if it's the Fourth of July.

-I told him to get out,
-now that he had what he came for.

-That was the end of Grogan,
-the man who killed my father,
-raped and murdered my sister,
-burned my ranch, shot my dog
-and stole my Bible.

-But if there was one law of the West,
-bastards had brothers
-who seemed to ride forever.

When George C. Scott, as Patton, gets up on the stage to incite the troops before Operation Torch it has got to be one of the best openings in history.   The filmmakers had to edit what Patton really said since his language, at times, was very profane.
