Ruger makes a good wheel gun. At least you won't need high cap mags for it.

My wife has a GP100 and it's built like a bank vault, which is why she likes it. The S&Ws always struck me as more slick and sophisticated.

There was a post yesterday or the day before for barely fired used Euro import S&W 13s. 3" .357s pre-lawsuit classic S&Ws, under $300. If I had any cash to buy a gun, I'd take a hard look at that deal.

The bedside hand safe has 2 Ruger GP100s in it (one 3", one 4"). If 12 shots of .357 can't get me to my gun room, there is SERIOUS trouble afoot!

I've had a S&W 686 for many years, in fact it was my first handgun. It's one that I would never even think about getting rid of. Its stock trigger is the best of all of my handguns. If you get one, you will be very happy.

I have a 7 shot S&W 686 and I love it.
ETA - One of the previous Nosler reloading manuals said that Ruger revolvers typically have less space between the cylinder and forcing cone than S&W's. Buy that neither came close to a Freedom Arms wheelgun, but I doubt you'll find one of those on the gun room's shelf, and you wouldn't to spring for it either. |

S&W Model 65 is the same as the 66 but with fixed sights. You can pound in fence posts with those guns and it'll still drill tiny holes at combat range. I carried one for most of my LEO career and had absolute confidence in it. I liked it better than the 66 because it was foolproof to the nth degree. The 66 is nice too, just depends on whether you need to tweak the sights for some reason... I can't think of any good reason to tweak sights on a close range combat piece though.

Be careful if you're going get the S&W scandium/titanium revolvers. I have a S&W Centennial Al frames and Ti cylinders 2 1/8" 342PD 38spl and a 292 44spl, and when shooting factory ammo the recoil is "very smart." I would try a few cylinder fulls before pluncking down your hard-earned greenbacks. At one time, you can order a brand new Pythons from the Colt Custom Shop for something like $1,100, way too expensive for the ordinary, mortal soul. |

If you are going to carry it, and can afford it, you already answered your question. It will become your primary carry. eta- The .38+P in the "airweight" is not at all unpleasant. I guess it's a matter of opinion, but I can't see the .357 in the Ti being unmanagable. |

I went with the 7-shot 686P with 6" barrel.
 I also went with the SP101 in 3 1/8" barrel.  It's a nice little gun, but full-power .357 mag loads are like taking a full-power shot from squatdog. I often find my knuckles bleeding after just a couple of boxes. |

I've got a 686 with 4" and a 686 (7shot) 6".
Stopping by a shop that has used (former LEO) 65s and 66s for $235.I bought the 7 shot there,new for $360 a few years ago! |

Smith and Wesson Model 19 with a four inch barrel was standard for the FBI and gun guru Bill Jordan was mighty fond of them. If you can swing it, the newer model K-comp is supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread in a revolver.

It is hard to go wrong with any of hte S&Ws. They are are about perfect. I have an older 686 that has a dream of a trigger that can put shot after shot into the same hole at 25 yards (when I'm having a good day).
The Ruger and Taurus guns are well built, but don't shoot as well as the S&W -- mainly because their triggers are not as smooth. My .02. |

If you don't mind me asking - what good is a .357?
For bummin' around the woods or hunting a .44 or .454 is better. For self/home defense a 1911 is better. I've been wondering about the usefulness of a .357 revolver, someone please enlighten me!

I'll pile-on here:
S&W 686 or 66. Nice fit and finish, very smooth triggers. Plenty accurate. Many accessories available. M66, 2.5" to 4" for carry; M686, 6" for heavy magnum loads. |
