Well, I can tell you that, where "shall issue" CCW exists, on average about 2% of the eligible population takes advantage of it.

Percentage of Adults With Carry Permits in "Shall Issue" States
I am reproducing in its entirety a post by Ken Grubb which appeared this morning on the PA-CCW mailing list. This ranks each of the "shall issue" CCW states by the percentage of adults who have a permit to carry a concealed firearm.



After crunching through the 2000 Census and 2003 Census estimates, the numbers in Chris Bird's Fourth Edition "The Concealed Handgun Manual", some official sources online which are a little more current, and filling in a few gaps from a 1998 CCRKBA report, the winners are:

Honorable mentions go to Georgia and New Hampshire. These are "old wave" Shall Issue states--IOW, pre Florida. Because issuance is scattered among many local agencies, no one in either Georgia or New Hampshire is collecting statewide numbers on how many folks are packing. Seems reasonable to place 'em somewhere between the two statistical extremes among the other "old wave" states (South and North Dakota). However, if I were a bettin' man I'd put 'em near the top, and probably above Washington.

I go to the calss March 31 and April 1 so I'll have mine soon. Im In New Mexico. I know alot of people who have their CCW.  .17% is pretty low I would have guessed about 10%.

I tryed to figure this out before (or guesstimate), I live in a faily rural county, in Oregon and the guy who gives the class that I went to does for a month (+/-), 30 peops to a class, full to capacity every time. And he isn't the only instructor around here either.

Where are the stats on NH? Why'd he leave us out? Last I heard (I think it was on a state GOA site), 13 out of every 100 NH residents has a concealed carry permit. I'm sure that doesn't equate to 13% actually carrying though.

When these numbers came out, I posted the same comment below:

CT has a distorted percentage.  There are plenty of folks in CT that possess a permit, but rarely carry.  The permit is required if one wants to purchase any handgun, to transport same to the range and to bypass the 14day wait for any firearm.  Unlike other states where one can purchase or transport without a permit, CT's percentage of permit holders does not accurately reflect those who carry on a regualr or semi-regular basis.

I wonder if packing.org compiles these stats from each CCW state.  Sure would be nice to know what percentage of the eligible people carry.

When I took my class our instructor gave the latest figures he had and it was around 3% just for Virginia Beach.

When I see numbers like this it is shocking to see what a minority as gun owners we have become.

What I see is that there's a whole bunch of gun owners out there that aren't taking advantage of their right to carry.

I wonder how many just don't want to spend the time or money to get one....

That's more than I expected here. I've known a couple of others who do, but it doesn't seem like 1 in 20. For sure, it is not distributed evenly amongst the population.

Washington is also an "old wave" state.  IIRC, Florida got CCW some time in the 1980's or 1990's.  Washington had it as far back as 1970, from what I've been told.

The Colorado numbers seem pretty accurate.

I know more people who carry illegally than legally even though I tell them how easy it is to get a permit.

The sheriff here in Cumberland County, PA added a separate office with a dedicated staff just to process CCW applications. It's a good thing.

I think most people in TN get their permits just so they can keep a loaded gun in the glove compartment of their car since our travel laws are pretty stiff.
