So I got a kid on the way, and I know my wife will at some point be nervous that I have a model 12 under the bed.

I am looking at something like this:

But at ~$180, I put this in the catagory of stupid expensive.

So I  had a brain storm. (and maybe this is out there, and I have yet to find it). What if one build some quick access safe, using a mechanical system of buttons that one could access in the dark thier guns, but keep curious 2 yr olds out of it.

I know all about teaching kids gun safety. My dads where in an unlocked closet. But we are in different times. And my wife is a nervous nelly since 9/11 (irrational "what ifs" in her head now, thanks Osama, you fucker!)

Anyway - the point is - what do you think of a mechanical system like that which would run 1/2 the price of what gunvault offers?

Of course, if this is already done, pleae forward to me what you know of!

Thanks!

I picked up a quick access handgun safe for about $50 a couple years back.  Maybe there's a cheaper model of what you're looking at?  Maybe you could get a cheap handgun safe and modify it for a long gun?
