A real boating accident!
Of course they were probably used in a crime and they dumped 'em there to get rid of the evidence... |
Or stolen. |
Around 1970 or so a National Guard armory in Indiana was ripped off. A bunch of M14's and M60's were stolen. The guys were caught and said they prepped them and dropped them in a lake in Brown Co.
Nothing was ever found. |
Seriuously - who here HASN'T thrown a firearm in a lake? (I know I have ) |
put them back in a tray of water or else they will rust faster than shit. The water will protect it from oxygen.
You need to take them down and clean and oil each part. |
Gunguy,
It was in all the papers. Look in the Indianapolis Star archives. it's bound to be there. It was huge news then. Northwest High School in Indianapolis had a bunch of M14's and 1903A3 Springfields stolen about the same time. I was a sophomore there when it happened. That incident was '77 |
It looks like it did several dollars worth of improvement to the mini 14.
Too bad about the 870 though. It looks like police issue. |
I read about one guy who hunted ducks on the ocean. Every year he would buy a cheap shotgun, not maintain it and retire it at the end of the season.
Seems a sad thing to do, but also neat, like a Viking funeral. |
+1 they could be stolen or evidence from a crime |
I'm impressed that the copy of MAXIM held up that well....after being at the bottom of the lake. Maybe Ruger and Remington should look into it.
Are you going to eat those sunflower seeds you found in the lake?
Send the Mini14 back to Ruger for a refirb. Same with the Remington shotgun.
What could it hurt? |
wow, well I guess I was wrong the mini14 doesn't make a good boat anchor either |
Must be the coating they put on the pages for the ... younger boys... |

Best thing to ever happen to the Mini-14.
You should have left it down there. |
Terrible dinner pic! I give it a 3.
Only sunflower seeds. no napkin, maybe use the towel as a substitute? no knife no beverage no stapler no measuring device +1 for reading material |
Brown Co. is not far from me.......looks like it's time to |
Maxims are liquid-resistant. No one likes the pages to stick together. - BG |
How the heck did you recover these? Or did you just find the pic? MJD
A little elbow grease, WD-40 and some #0000 steel wool and they'll be good as new !
so tell us, how did you find these? im curious. scubadiving? were they in a shallow spot?
Hmmmm.... Years ago, the S. Calif LE such as LAPD and LASO/LASD(Los Angeles County Sherriff's Office/Dept) would drop weapons off the deep part of the coastline. Contrary to popular beliefs, steels don't rust unless they are exposed to air, just being under salt water doesn't do a thing for modern alloys at least in the short term. of course some enterpising
The shotgun was clearly a sad accident. I suspect that the Mini-14 was being used as a boat anchor...
Dinner pics, breakfast pics, now snack pics?
After checking with the cops, you might want to save them for the next "turn in a gun for free sneakers" event. |
I thought they dumped those in DEEP water. |
Before they started chopping them up, guns here were routinely taken out into the middle of the lake and dumped. We are talking 50 years ago or longer.
They also dumped a treasure trove of old film footage from the film studios that used to be here into the lake when the old film stock was deemed a fire hazard. |
Speaking of diving for treasure, I wonder if they ever found the weapons that Jesse Ventura and friends lost in the river near Niland, California. They lost a Stoner 63 and several M-16s. According to the report divers were unable to locate them at the time.

Turn it into the LEOs if it is not stolen or used in a crime they will likely return it to you.
What would you want with that piece of rusted junk? |
Conversation piece. |

Nice one. |

Shut up. IBTL posts just aren't funny, creative, unique, or have any redeeming value anymore. |

Gotcha . I thought we were going to be treated to another restoration thread like the shotgun someone found recently. |
So how did you find them? |
