and why?  The fiance's parents are panicky folks, and always keep their couch pulled away from the wall to allow the heating vent (in the floor) an un-obstructed flow.  Does a couch over a vent pose a fire risk? What say ye?

I call b.s., but am eager to be proven wrong-

B.S.  on fire hazard.  The air only comes out so hot, the air is not going to get hotter by its self.  Raidiators you have to be carefull with.

Not a fire risk by a long shot IMO.

I don't like to block vents cause it's blocking a vent for pete sakes.

Not a fire hazard, but blocking a vent will decrease it's efficency.

What would you rather heat the room or the bottom of the furniture? Once you answer this you will know what to do.

That's the key.

Blocking a heating vent that you use is just plain stupid.

It's rough on the furniture.  Dries out the wood and upholstery.  But no fire hazard.

That's like saying that you can't keep stuff in the refrigerator because everything will freeze!

It's a heater, not a burner.

Yep-  It will hasten any wood furniture getting big cracks, and bake leather prematurely.

You can get plastic ducts that lay on the floor over the outlets and guide the hot air out from under the furniture. I have several in my house and they work well.

Is this really being discussed?

Of course it is. It's GD.

the furniture goes where it works best. if it's over a duct, oh well.

I'm not going to lose sleep over the useful life of my furniture.

Hot air vents staring a fire?? Ha! no. The air comes out around 160 degrees. You will ruin furniture and block the heat run though.

On a side note, if you do block too many heat runs you can overheat the furnace and if a few safety devices fail you can crack a heat exchanger. A very costly repair or replacement.

Hot water radiators are around 180* Steam radiators 220*

I've always been told nay, not so much for a fire reason, but just to ensure even distribution of heat from the vent.
